Edge blurring or local missing prints during Solder Paste stencil printing are often not caused by a single factor, but are the combined result of mismatched stencil aperture dimensions and solder paste particle size, solvent evaporation caused by excessive standing time before reflow, and uncalibrated synchronization of squeegee pressure and speed. We once experienced continuous solder paste surface skinning for three consecutive days when the ambient humidity was below 30%RH, forcing us to install a local humidification device and shorten the waiting time for solder paste to warm up after being taken out of the refrigerator to within 2 hours.
Frequent solder spiking or solder balling during Manual Soldering with Solder Wire is usually related to excessive soldering tip temperature, wire feed angle deviating from 45 degrees, and uneven Flux paste filling inside the solder wire core. After a production line batch replacement of solder wire brands, a wetting lag phenomenon occurred. Actual testing found that the new batch of solder wire had a flux paste content of only 1.8%, lower than the original material's 2.3%, which directly led to a 0.15mm decrease in solder joint climb height and a thrust test pass rate falling below 92%.
After Solder Bars melt in the wave soldering bath, the surface continuously turns gray and solder joints appear dull, which is most likely caused by copper content in the solder bars exceeding 0.08% leading to intermetallic compound precipitation. Meanwhile, if the flux paste spray volume is below 85ml/min, it cannot effectively remove the oxide layer on PCB pads. During commissioning at a factory in Dongguan, we found that the nozzle clogging rate reached 37%. After replacing with fan-shaped nozzles with a self-cleaning structure, the flux paste coverage rate increased to 99.2%.
Flux paste residue turning white under QFN devices and ICT testing falsely reporting open circuits is fundamentally caused by incomplete thermal decomposition of the rosin-based system, rather than incomplete cleaning. When the reflow peak temperature is below 235°C or the holding time is less than 60 seconds, the conductivity of the flux paste residue jumps to 1.2×10⁻⁶ S/cm, far exceeding the 0.5×10⁻⁶ S/cm limit specified in IPC-J-STD-004.
Improper cold storage of solder paste causing sudden viscosity changes is common in batches that have undergone more than two freeze-thaw cycles. Its thixotropic index drops sharply from the initial 0.62 to 0.41, directly causing the print release defect rate to rise to 18%. We require all solder paste to be stored flat in a single layer in a constant temperature refrigerator (4±1°C), and shaken at low frequency with an oscillator for 15 minutes before use to restore its rheological properties.
Abnormal winding tension of solder wire causing jamming of the automatic wire feeder mostly occurs in thin diameter specifications below 0.5mm. At this time, it is necessary to simultaneously check the inner wall wear of the wire guide tube and the response delay of the servo motor. During a troubleshooting, it was found that the encoder signal jitter reached ±3 pulses. After replacing the shielded cable, the wire feeding accuracy recovered from ±0.8mm to ±0.12mm.
The accelerated activity attenuation of flux paste under a nitrogen atmosphere is because the lack of oxygen inhibits the activation reaction of some organic acids. If the 0.3s spray duration used in an air environment is still applied, the actual coverage thickness only reaches 68% of the design value. The spray time must be extended to 0.44s to ensure effective wetting at the root of QFP pins.
