FAQ

Which solder paste is used for LED SMD soldering?

The selection of SMD LED Solder Paste directly determines post-soldering reliability, especially on high-density SMT production lines, where the fluidity and wettability of the Solder Paste must match the material of component leads and the pad design.

Generally, solder paste with a silver content between 3.0% and 3.5% is recommended. This composition ensures good electrical conductivity, prevents cost from getting out of control due to excessively high silver content, and avoids the brittleness commonly seen in lead-free solder paste.

The viscosity value of the solder paste is another important indicator. For SMD LEDs, medium-viscosity solder paste is recommended, which can maintain good release performance during the printing process and prevent solder paste collapse caused by excessively low viscosity, which would otherwise affect the shape of solder joints.

In actual operation, the activation time of the solder paste also needs to be adjusted according to the temperature profile of Reflow Soldering. If the activation time is too short, the Flux cannot fully remove oxides; if it is too long, it may cause solder joint oxidation or solder splashing.

The storage conditions of solder paste must also be strictly controlled. Unopened solder paste should be stored in a refrigerated environment below 4°C, and must be used up within 24 hours after opening; otherwise, moisture absorption will lead to degraded solder paste performance.

In the procurement process, it is recommended to prioritize suppliers with complete quality certifications, such as those compliant with environmental standards like RoHS and REACH, while paying attention to batch consistency of the solder paste to avoid an increase in soldering defect rates caused by batch differences.

For special application scenarios, such as LED devices operating in high-temperature environments, high-melting-point solder paste can be considered. However, the reflow soldering temperature profile must be adjusted synchronously to adapt to the new melting point parameters, to prevent issues such as cold soldering or solder joint fracture.

The selection of solder paste for SMD LED soldering must be combined with specific process requirements, and comprehensively evaluated from multiple dimensions including composition, viscosity, activation time, and storage conditions, to ensure stable and reliable final soldering quality.
