Wave Soldering Pot Temperature: Parameters Corresponding to Different Solder Bar Alloys

A
For SAC305 lead-free solder bar, keep the molten pool at 255~265℃; for Sn63Pb37 leaded solder bar, use 240~250℃; and for low-temperature alloy bar, lower the temperature according to the specification. If the temperature is too low, the solder flows poorly and joints come out rough with cold joints; if it is too high, oxidation speeds up and dross increases sharply. Always measure the actual temperature inside the solder pot — don't just trust the display. Different alloys must not be mixed freely in the same pot, as this changes the melting point and soldering performance.

Many production lines habitually set the wave soldering pot temperature uniformly to 255°C, while neglecting that the liquidus temperature of lead-free Solder Bar alloys such as SAC305 differs from that of Leaded Solder Bar alloys such as Sn63/Pb37 by more than 35°C. This rough setting will cause SAC305 to be in an undercooled state at 255°C with severely insufficient wetting force, while keeping Sn63/Pb37 in the high-temperature accelerated oxidation zone for a long time. The result is that the former frequently presents dull solder joints and insufficient solder climbing height, while the latter generates large amounts of dross and contaminates the PCB surface.

Some people believe that as long as the solder bar packaging is labeled "universal type", it can adapt to all wave soldering machine parameters. But in fact, the so-called universality is only a marketing slogan of manufacturers, with no unified standard support behind it. The proportion of trace elements such as silver, copper, and bismuth in solder bar alloys of the same grade from different brands has a fluctuation of ±0.15%, and this tiny difference is enough to make the same equipment exhibit good wetting for Factory A's SAC305 at 250°C, but produce obvious solder dragging phenomenon for Factory B's product of the same grade. The root cause is that the Flux carrier and intermetallic interfacial reaction kinetics are greatly affected by trace elements. The correct approach is to redo the wetting angle test every time the solder bar brand is replaced, and synchronously adjust the wave soldering pot temperature by ±2°C.

Some engineers blindly lower the wave soldering pot temperature when they see solder joint pinholes, unaware that this instead exacerbates the increase in solder bar alloy viscosity and surface tension. Especially when using bismuth-containing solder bar alloys, lowering the temperature from 248°C to 245°C will cause the melt viscosity to jump by 18%, directly leading to residual solder filaments between pins that cannot retract in time. The correct approach should prioritize checking the matching of chain speed and inclination angle, and confirming whether the flux spraying amount is below the 0.8g/m² threshold, rather than unilaterally adjusting the wave soldering pot temperature.

It is common on site to use an infrared thermometer gun to directly aim at the solder liquid surface for reading to calibrate the wave soldering pot temperature, but this method often has an error of ±8°C, because the oxide film and vapor layer will seriously interfere with infrared penetration. More critically, if the measurement point deviates from the actual buried area of the thermocouple by more than 50mm, the obtained data cannot reflect the true contact temperature of the solder joint at all. The correct approach must take the reading of the equipment's original thermocouple as the standard, and the first shift every day must use a metering-certified immersion calibrator to conduct actual measurement and comparison at 30mm below the solder liquid surface.

Some production lines lower the wave soldering pot temperature to only 5°C above the solidus line of SAC305 to reduce dross generation, for example 222°C. This seemingly reduces the oxidation rate, but actually causes insufficient precipitation of Cu6Sn5 intermetallic compounds inside the solder bar alloy, resulting in a decrease in solder joint shear strength by more than 12%. At the same time, the wave forming stability deteriorates, and intermittent wave breakage is prone to occur. The correct approach is to control the wave soldering pot temperature within the range of 20~25°C above the liquidus line, with SAC305 corresponding to 245~250°C and Sn63/Pb37 corresponding to 248~253°C, and ensure that the nitrogen purity in the furnace is maintained above 99.99% to inhibit oxidation side reactions.

Purchasing personnel often choose low-silver solder bar alloys based on unit price to reduce costs, but do not synchronously evaluate their compression effect on the wave soldering pot temperature window. For example, after replacing Ag3.0% with Ag0.3%, the recommended upper temperature limit is forced to be lowered from 255°C to 248°C, otherwise it is easy to induce nozzle blockage and abnormal pump wear. The hazard is that the downtime frequency of the entire line increases by more than 3 times. The root cause is that the precipitation temperature of the Sn-Cu eutectic phase in the low-silver solder bar alloy increases and the distribution is uneven. The correct approach is to jointly complete the full-condition temperature gradient verification with the process and equipment manufacturers at the selection stage, rather than only comparing single-point melting point data.

Simple checklist: Confirm that the currently used solder bar alloy grade is consistent with the MSDS composition table, check whether the equipment thermocouple installation depth is ≥25mm, check whether the daily increment of dross in the past three days exceeds 3kg, spot-check whether the solder joint wetting angle of the latest five boards is all <30°, compare whether the nitrogen flow meter reading is stable in the range of 15~25L/min, and verify whether at least 2 hours of no-load constant temperature + wetting test has been completed after the last solder bar batch replacement.
