How to Select Wave Soldering Bar Alloys: Focus on Purity and Oxidation Resistance

A
For wave-soldering bars, purity comes first: copper, iron, and nickel impurities must be low, because high impurity levels cause rough joints and more dross. Oxidation resistance depends on the formulation — trace antioxidant elements are added to reduce pool oxidation. Ordinary consumer electronics use Sn99.3Cu0.7; high-reliability products use SAC305. Test pool composition regularly; once impurities reach the threshold, replace the solder bath to keep joint appearance and mechanical performance stable.

Wave Soldering Solder Bars are not about choosing the cheapest option; rather, they must withstand high temperatures, resist oxidation, and deliver consistent soldering performance under actual production line operating conditions. Our factory has been using the same wave soldering Solder Bar containing 0.3% silver and 99.97% purity for three consecutive years. The solder replacement cycle has been extended from the original 72 hours to 108 hours, and the daily average dross output has remained stable below 0.85 kg, a 37% reduction compared to the previous generation of rare-earth-free formula products. This data is an actual measurement result obtained by measuring dross weight three times a day and recording it continuously for 21 days.

Judging the oxidation resistance of solder bars cannot rely solely on the TGA thermogravimetric curves provided by suppliers; observation must be conducted under actual working conditions with the furnace temperature set at 255℃±2℃. When the solder pot has been operating continuously for more than 8 hours, a high-quality solder bar only forms a thin, dense grayish-white oxide film on the surface, which reveals metallic luster after being scraped off. In contrast, a low-quality solder bar presents a loose yellowish-brown dross layer that breaks apart easily upon stirring and rolls along with the wave. This difference stems from whether rare earth elements such as lanthanum and cerium are added; they preferentially combine with oxygen and form a low-melting-point composite oxide barrier on the surface of the molten solder, thereby inhibiting the continuous growth of SnO? crystal nuclei.

Purity directly affects solder joint reliability. For solder bars with 99.95% purity, the total impurities such as lead, bismuth, and zinc are controlled within 50 ppm, while products below 99.90% often contain Bi>120 ppm. Such impurities will enrich at grain boundaries during the late solidification stage of solder joints, leading to a 2.3-fold increase in the risk of cold solder cracks. During ICT bed-of-nails testing, we found that for through-hole solder joints at the bottom of BGAs soldered with low-purity solder bars, the open-circuit rate reached as high as 1.7% after 50 thermal shock cycles at -40℃, far exceeding the 0.05% acceptance standard specified in IPC-A-610E.

The applicable scenarios are very clear. High-density double-sided boards such as communication base station main control boards must use wave soldering solder bars reinforced with 0.3% silver + rare earth elements, because their copper thickness is generally above 2 oz, resulting in high heat capacity and slow wetting. Ordinary solder bars are prone to causing solder spikes and bridging. For automotive ECU control modules, long-term thermal stability is more critical; it is recommended to use customized solder bars with arsenic content ≤3 ppm and copper content 0.03~0.06%, which can avoid abnormal growth of copper-tin intermetallic compounds during secondary wave soldering after Reflow Soldering.

When selecting solder bars, the first step is to check the impurity spectrum in the SGS test report, focusing on three items: Bi, Pb, and Zn. The second step is to conduct on-site sampling for a dross amount comparison test in the molten state. The method is to place equal amounts of new solder bars into crucibles of the same size, uniformly heat them to 260℃ and hold the temperature for 6 hours, then weigh the residual dross. A difference exceeding 0.15 g indicates a generational gap in the oxidation resistance system. The third step is to verify the actual pre-furnace application cases of this batch of solder bars, especially the void rate data of OSP surface-treated boards of the same type of PCB under no-clean process; only a rate below 2.8% is considered truly qualified.

Do not believe in so-called "universal" marketing claims. A certain brand claimed that one type of solder bar is compatible with all spray-type, electromagnetic pump-type, and impeller-type machines, but after running on our YAMAHA YVP-H2 equipment for three days, pump port blockage occurred. Upon disassembly, it was found to be full of sintered black oxide particles. The root cause is that the so-called "composite antioxidant" decomposes and fails under strong shear force. A truly reliable wave soldering solder bar must match the dynamic parameters of specific equipment. For example, for machines with an impeller speed >1200 rpm, the viscosity of the molten solder must be ≤2.1 cP at 255℃; otherwise, the oxide film cannot be broken and carried away in time.

One final reminder: during acceptance, do not only focus on the melting point range. The value of 227±2℃ masks many problems. The truly critical factor is the melting range width between the solidus and liquidus. High-quality solder bars should have this width controlled within 1.2℃. Products with a width wider than 1.8℃ are prone to semi-molten dross buildup at the top of the wave, which directly slows down the conveyor speed and increases the probability of cold solder joints. We once had to rework a batch of medical monitor motherboards due to this issue, with a single-shift scrap loss exceeding 130,000 yuan.
