Q

What Are the Lead-Free Solder Paste Models

A
Mainstream lead-free solder pastes, by alloy: SAC305 (Sn96.5Ag3Cu0.5) is the most common, with a 217℃ melting point and high reliability; SAC0307 (Sn99Ag0.3Cu0.7) is low in cost, with a 227℃ melting point; Sn99.3Cu0.7 is a tin-copper alloy, low in cost but weak in creep resistance; low-temperature bismuth-based paste has a 138℃ melting point and suits temperature-sensitive components. By powder size there are T3, T4, and T5—the larger the number, the finer the particles. By halogen there are standard and halogen-free grades. Choose based on the product's environmental, reliability, component-density, and cost requirements.

The selection of lead-free Solder Paste models directly affects soldering quality and production efficiency. In practical applications, comprehensive judgment must be made based on solder joint performance, Reflow Soldering temperature profile, and component types.

Sn96.5Ag3.0Cu0.5 is one of the common lead-free solder paste models, with a melting point of approximately 217°C. It is suitable for most SMT processes, and performs stably especially in high-density PCB soldering. However, it should be noted that its fluidity is poorer than that of traditional lead-containing solder pastes.

Sn97.8Ag2.0Cu0.2 places more emphasis on the mechanical strength and reliability of solder joints, and is suitable for products with high heat resistance requirements. However, it is prone to slumping or bridging issues during the printing process, requiring optimization of stencil aperture design.

In addition, there are models such as Sn96.0Ag3.5Cu0.5 and Sn95.5Ag4.0Cu0.5, whose composition ratios are slightly adjusted to adapt to specific soldering environments, such as high-temperature or high-frequency circuits.

The selection of lead-free solder paste models also needs to consider the activity level of the Flux. For example, low-activity models are suitable for precision electronic devices, while high-activity models are suitable for soldering components with severe surface oxidation.

In actual production, it is recommended to first conduct small-batch trial soldering to verify the compatibility of the lead-free solder paste model with equipment parameters and process flow, and avoid batch defects caused by improper selection.

For procurement personnel, attention should be paid to the batch stability, supplier certification qualifications, and environmental compliance of lead-free solder paste models to ensure that the materials meet RoHS standards.

The diversity of lead-free solder paste models provides more flexibility for SMT processes, but also increases the complexity of technical management, requiring engineers to have solid material knowledge and rich practical experience.
