The distinction between lead-containing Solder Paste and lead-free solder paste mainly relies on their compositional characteristics. Lead-containing solder paste usually contains lead, while lead-free solder paste is mainly composed of alloys such as tin-silver-copper, and this difference directly determines their melting points and soldering effects.
In actual production, observing the appearance characteristics of solder paste can serve as a preliminary judgment basis. The surface of lead-containing solder paste usually presents a relatively dull color, while lead-free solder paste is relatively brighter. However, this method is not absolutely reliable and needs to be verified with other means.
Composition testing is the most accurate way to distinguish the two. Quantitative analysis of the metal elements in the solder paste can be carried out through a spectrum analyzer or X-ray fluorescence testing equipment. Although this method requires special instruments, it can ensure that the data is true and valid.
The adaptability of the soldering process is also an important reference factor. Lead-containing solder paste exhibits good wettability and fluidity during the Reflow Soldering process, and is suitable for some components sensitive to temperature curves. Lead-free solder paste, due to its higher melting point, often requires adjustment of heating parameters to avoid cold soldering or poor solder joints.
During the procurement process, special attention should be paid to the technical data provided by suppliers, including the RoHS certification of the solder paste, lead content declarations, and post-soldering performance test reports, as this information directly affects the stability of subsequent production.
For experienced SMT engineers, they can also quickly identify the type by comparing the performance of different batches of solder paste in printing, reflow soldering, and later inspection. For example, details such as the gloss of solder joints after soldering and the formation of solder balls can provide key clues.
In daily operations, establishing a sound solder paste management system, clearly distinguishing between lead-containing and lead-free products, and conducting regular sampling inspections can effectively avoid process problems caused by misuse and ensure product reliability.
The reasonable selection of solder paste type needs to be combined with specific application scenarios, taking into account both environmental protection regulations and equipment conditions and product performance requirements, to ensure an efficient and stable process flow.
