Q

Which is Lower in Cost: Solder Paste Process or Red Glue Process?

A
The red-adhesive process is lower in cost. Red glue itself is far cheaper than solder paste: it holds components onto the PCB, and the board then goes through wave soldering. It suits mixed boards with both through-hole and SMT parts and uses little solder. The solder-paste process requires stencil printing of paste, which is expensive, plus reflow equipment, but it gives higher soldering reliability and suits pure SMT, fine-pitch, and BGA parts. Red glue suits high-volume, low-end consumer electronics where cost is king; high-reliability, fine-pitch products must use the solder-paste process and cannot choose on cost alone.

The cost issues of Solder Paste process and red glue process need to be analyzed from multiple dimensions. First of all, material price is one of the core factors. The alloy composition of solder paste is complex, and its price is generally higher than that of red glue. However, red glue requires additional hot air or infrared heating equipment during the curing process, which will increase energy consumption costs.

The solder paste printing process has high requirements for the precision of the stencil. If the stencil design is unreasonable or the manufacturing error is large, it will lead to serious solder paste waste. The dispensing process of red glue is relatively flexible, but the maintenance cost and consumable consumption of the dispensing machine cannot be ignored either.

In terms of equipment investment, Reflow Soldering equipment is the core of the solder paste process, and its temperature curve control accuracy directly affects the soldering quality. The red glue process requires a dedicated dispensing machine and curing oven, and the procurement and maintenance costs of these equipment need to be included in the overall cost.

In terms of labor costs, solder paste printing operations require skilled technicians to perform debugging and monitoring. Although red glue dispensing is relatively simple to operate, the setting and adjustment of dispensing parameters also require precision. Therefore, there is not much difference in personnel training and management costs between the two.

In actual production, which process is more economical also needs to consider the product type and batch size. For high-density, small-size PCB boards, the solder paste process is more suitable, while the red glue process has more advantages in multi-layer boards or special structural parts, but it needs to be weighed according to specific needs.

The stability of the process flow is also an important factor affecting costs. If offset or missing printing occurs in solder paste printing, it may lead to the scrapping of the entire batch of products, while insufficient red glue curing may cause component detachment, both of which will bring additional losses.

The cost level of the solder paste process and the red glue process is not absolute, but depends on specific production conditions and process requirements. Only through actual data comparison can the most reasonable conclusion be drawn.
