When Solder Paste is too dry, it usually directly leads to poor printing quality, manifested as insufficient solder joints, missing printing, or edge burrs. In such cases, timely adjustments must be made.
The common method for thinning solder paste is to add a dedicated solder paste thinner. Such products are generally composed of rosin, solvents, and activators, which can effectively reduce the viscosity of the solder paste without affecting its soldering performance. However, it should be noted that different brands and models of solder paste have varying compatibility with thinners.
In practical operation, the solder paste should first be taken out of the refrigerated environment and allowed to warm to room temperature before being adjusted, to avoid component separation or agglomeration caused by low temperatures. During the thinning process, continuous stirring is required to ensure uniform mixing, and the amount of thinner added each time should not be excessive to prevent disrupting the chemical balance of the solder paste.
If the solder paste is only slightly dry, you can also try gently scraping it with a spatula to redistribute it, while appropriately increasing the printing pressure and speed to help improve the printing effect. However, this method is only applicable to slightly dry conditions.
For solder paste that has already hardened or agglomerated significantly, it is recommended to replace it with new material directly, as such solder paste cannot guarantee soldering quality even after thinning, and may even lead to an increase in the defect rate of subsequent processes.
In daily management, it is necessary to strengthen the storage and usage specifications of solder paste, control the usage time after opening, avoid prolonged exposure to high-temperature and high-humidity environments, and regularly inspect the appearance and fluidity of the solder paste to detect abnormalities in advance.
When selecting a solder paste thinner, priority should be given to products with good compatibility with the original solder paste, and operations should be carried out in strict accordance with the technical parameters provided by the supplier to avoid soldering defects or equipment contamination caused by misuse.
Thinning solder paste is a task that requires flexible handling based on actual conditions. It is necessary to pay attention to operational details while also focusing on the stability of long-term use, ensuring the smooth operation of the entire SMT process.
