Q

Can Tin Powder and Soldering Flux Be Used to Make Solder Paste?

A
We do not recommend mixing your own paste from powder and soldering oil. Industrial paste is a precision formulation: powder size, sphericity, and oxidation level, plus flux composition, thixotropic agent, and solvent ratios, are all tightly specified. Hand-mixed paste cannot control viscosity or thixotropy, prints poorly, and reflows with cold joints, voids, and solder balls. Home-mixed paste carries many impurities, uncontrolled oxidation, and no reliable joint assurance. Production must use qualified paste from a reputable manufacturer — do not blend your own, to avoid batch soldering defects.

As a core material in the SMT process, Solder Paste directly affects soldering quality and product reliability, and whether tin powder and soldering Flux can be used to make homemade solder paste has become a common question on production floors.

Solder paste consists of three parts: tin powder, flux, and solvent. Tin powder accounts for approximately 85%~95%, flux accounts for 5%~15%, and the solvent is used to adjust viscosity. If you only use tin powder and soldering flux to try making homemade solder paste, you first need to confirm whether the soldering flux has an appropriate ratio of active agent and solvent.

In actual production, the particle size distribution of tin powder, oxidation level, and the activity level of the flux are all key factors affecting soldering results, while commercially available soldering flux is usually designed for specific purposes and may not meet the requirements of solder paste for wettability and residue control.

If you forcibly mix tin powder and soldering flux, it may lead to excessive residue after soldering due to mismatched flux components, and even cause cold solder joints or bridging. Meanwhile, uneven tin powder particle size will reduce printing accuracy and increase the risk of printing defects.

Solder paste requires strict temperature and humidity control during storage and use, while homemade solder paste often lacks stable formulations and testing methods, which can easily lead to unstable performance due to environmental changes and affect the yield of mass production.

For scenarios with special needs, such as small-batch repair or experimental verification, you can try preparing a small amount in a laboratory environment, but you must ensure high-purity tin powder, compatible soldering flux components, and verify the soldering effect through Reflow Soldering tests.

The production of solder paste involves multi-dimensional process control, and it is impossible to reach industrial-grade standards with only tin powder and soldering flux. It is recommended to prioritize finished solder paste provided by professional manufacturers to ensure production efficiency and product quality.
