In the SMT production line, the choice between Leaded Solder Paste and lead-free Solder Paste directly affects soldering quality and production efficiency. Leaded solder paste has a lower melting point and good fluidity, making it suitable for high-density boards and precision components, but its lead content poses potential risks to the environment and human health. While lead-free solder paste complies with the RoHS standard, it requires higher Reflow Soldering temperatures and stricter process control.
In practical operations, leaded solder paste offers more stable printing performance, with relatively flexible adjustments to squeegee pressure and stencil aperture dimensions. Due to differences in alloy composition, lead-free solder paste is prone to slumping or poor wetting, requiring optimization of stencil design and printing parameters, while also paying attention to the shelf life and storage conditions of the solder paste.
For high-frequency circuits or high-temperature environment applications, leaded solder paste has stronger thermal stability. However, as environmental regulations become stricter, lead-free solder paste is gradually becoming the mainstream, especially in the consumer electronics field. Customer environmental requirements are driving production lines to gradually undergo retrofitting, replacing dedicated equipment and adjusting process workflows.
When making procurement decisions, it is necessary to comprehensively consider cost, yield, and environmental factors. Leaded solder paste has a lower unit price but may face export restrictions, while lead-free solder paste has higher initial investment but is more sustainable in the long term. At the same time, attention should be paid to formulation differences between solder pastes of different brands to avoid compatibility issues affecting soldering results.
During actual debugging, it has been found that certain lead-free solder pastes are prone to cold soldering defects at low temperatures, which need to be improved by optimizing the reflow soldering profile and preheating time. For leaded solder paste, vigilance is required against oxidation and solder ball issues, especially in high-humidity environments, where the post-opening usage time of the solder paste must be strictly controlled.
The choice of which solder paste to use should be comprehensively determined based on specific product requirements, equipment capabilities, and environmental policies. There is no absolute superiority or inferiority; the key lies in matching process parameters and maintaining a stable production process.
