Q

What Defects Will Occur in SMT Soldering If Solder Paste Is Not Properly Brought Back to Room Temperature?

A
When solder paste is not fully brought back to temperature, opening the lid lets cold paste meet ambient moisture, which condenses and is absorbed. During reflow, the moisture vaporizes rapidly and readily causes solder balls, spatter, and voids. Viscosity fluctuates widely, printing definition worsens, and insufficient solder and slump appear. Flux activation is also affected, wettability drops, and cold joints and poor wetting result. Never open the paste straight from the refrigerator; allow it to stand and return to temperature according to the procedure so moisture cannot enter the paste system.

Inadequate Solder Paste temperature recovery is a common process issue in SMT production. Solder paste must undergo temperature recovery according to standard requirements before use; insufficient temperature or time will lead to degraded solder paste performance.

Inadequate solder paste temperature recovery may result in incomplete solder joints. The Flux in the solder paste fails to fully activate, leading to poor wettability and preventing solder joints from forming good connections.

Inadequate solder paste temperature recovery can also cause cold solder joint issues. The insufficient fluidity of the solder paste results in incomplete contact between component pins and pads, affecting the reliability of electrical connections.

Inadequate solder paste temperature recovery easily leads to bridging phenomena. The solder paste does not melt sufficiently, causing short circuits between adjacent solder joints.

Inadequate solder paste temperature recovery may lead to solder ball defects. The solder paste cannot be evenly distributed during heating, resulting in solder balls in some areas.

Inadequate solder paste temperature recovery may also cause abnormal Solder Paste Viscosity. The viscosity value of the solder paste does not meet requirements, affecting printing performance and soldering quality.

When inadequate solder paste temperature recovery occurs, first check whether the temperature recovery equipment is operating normally. Ensure that the recovery temperature and time meet the requirements specified in the solder paste specification.

If inadequate solder paste temperature recovery is found, immediately stop using the affected solder paste and replace it with qualified solder paste. Avoid batch defects caused by solder paste quality issues.

When inadequate solder paste temperature recovery occurs, strengthen process monitoring and regularly inspect the condition of the solder paste. Ensure that every batch of solder paste undergoes proper temperature recovery treatment.

When inadequate solder paste temperature recovery occurs, establish a comprehensive solder paste management system. Include standardized operations for storage, temperature recovery, usage, and other related processes.
