SMT Solder Paste Cleaning Process: Distinguishing Between No-Clean and Water-Wash Solder Paste

A
No-clean paste leaves low flux residue and generally needs no cleaning, but you must still assess its effect on insulation and ICT testing. Water-washable paste uses water-soluble flux and must be cleaned with a water-based process after soldering. Solvent-cleaning paste requires dedicated organic solvents. No-clean is not residue-free — high-voltage and high-reliability products still require a residue risk assessment. When selecting paste, determine the cleaning process based on the product's reliability requirements; do not mix cleaning processes.

Why does obvious white Flux residue appear on the PCB surface after printing, and why does AOI frequently report false solder joint defects? The root cause is that water-washable Solder Paste was mistakenly used as no-clean solder paste, and the subsequent cleaning process was not performed, resulting in carbonization and precipitation of rosin-based resin after reflow. The practical solution is to immediately stop using this batch of solder paste and switch to a certified no-clean model, while using an isopropyl alcohol cotton swab to wipe the edge areas of boards that have been mounted but not reflowed. The key preventive measure is to establish a binding list between solder paste material codes and cleaning processes, and all newly introduced solder paste must be accompanied by a J-STD-020 compatibility report and cleaning verification data.

Why does white powdery crystal appear on the PCB gold finger area after cleaning, and why does the cross-cut test show a paint peeling rate of 12%? The reason is that the conductivity of deionized water exceeded the standard to 5.8μS/cm during water-washable solder paste cleaning, and the spray pressure of the cleaning machine was set too high (up to 0.42MPa), causing the chloride-containing cleaning solution to enrich and crystallize at the edge of the gold finger. The practical solution is to immediately calibrate the conductivity to ≤1.2μS/cm, reduce the spray pressure to 0.25±0.03MPa, and add 12 minutes of 60℃ hot air circulation drying after cleaning. The key preventive measure is that the first piece of each shift must use a portable conductivity meter to actually measure the water quality, and the cleaning tank solution must be replaced every 4 hours with temperature and pH values recorded.

Why does the contact failure rate of ICT bed-of-nails testing suddenly rise to 8.3% after no-clean solder paste soldering, while a semi-transparent gel-like film is visible on the solder joint surface under a microscope? The root cause is that the humidity of the Solder Paste Storage environment has long been higher than 60%RH, causing the rosin matrix to absorb moisture and degrade, and cannot be completely volatilized during reflow to form an insulating film. The practical solution is to move all inventory solder paste into a nitrogen cabinet (dew point ≤-40℃) and let it stand for 24 hours, and pre-bake the mounted but not reflowed PCB at 75℃ for 30 minutes before reflow. The key preventive measure is that after the solder paste is thawed, it must be allowed to warm up in a 22±3℃ environment for 4 hours before opening the lid, and the cumulative exposure time after opening must not exceed 12 hours.

Why do dense micropore corrosions appear at the bottom of QFN after water-washable solder paste cleaning, and why does XRF detection find that the chlorine content reaches 0.17wt%? The direct cause is that the water temperature of the final rinse of the cleaning machine is lower than 45℃, causing the alkaline cleaning agent residue to react with the brominated flame retardant in the PCB board to generate corrosive salts. The practical solution is to forcibly increase the rinse water temperature to 52±2℃ and extend the spray time to 90 seconds, while installing an online conductivity monitoring and alarm device at the inlet of the rinse section. The key preventive measure is that the cleaning machine maintenance table must include a daily check of the heating module power attenuation rate, and the heating tube must be replaced if the attenuation exceeds 15%.

Why does the squeegee life drop sharply by 40% after the same printing machine switches to different brands of no-clean solder paste, and why does the solder paste show irregular wall climbing in the stencil opening? The reason is that the thixotropic index (Thixotropic Index) of the new solder paste is 4.1, which is much higher than the original material's 2.7, causing a sudden increase in shear stress when the squeegee presses down and accelerated wear. The practical solution is to adjust the squeegee angle from 60° to 52°, reduce the printing speed from 40mm/s to 28mm/s, and wipe the back of the stencil with a dust-free cloth dipped in special solder paste cleaner after every 5 boards printed. The key preventive measure is that the rheological curve of all new solder paste must be actually measured before introduction, and any TI value that exceeds the production line equipment adaptation range (2.5~3.8) must be rejected.

Why does CAF failure occur in the high temperature and high humidity aging test (85℃/85%RH/1000h) of the cleaned PCB, and why does the slice find that the anode conduction path starts at the edge of the BGA pad? The root cause is that the organic acid activator remaining after water-washable solder paste cleaning is not completely neutralized, and continuously migrates with the copper ions of the PCB board under the action of an electric field. The practical solution is to add 0.3% concentration of disodium hydrogen phosphate buffer to the final pure water spray of the cleaning line, and control the pH value between 7.2 and 7.4. The key preventive measure is that each batch of cleaning solution must be stored with 100mL sample refrigerated for 7 days, and the residual amount of formic acid and acetic acid must be sampled monthly with an ion chromatograph.
