The red glue process and Solder Paste process have different focuses in SMT production, and the pad design must strictly match the process characteristics, otherwise it will lead to component offset or poor soldering, especially in high-density PCB assembly, a small error in pad size may cause batch defects.
The pads of the red glue process usually require a larger opening area to ensure that the glue fully covers the SMD area, while avoiding glue overflow and contamination of adjacent solder joints, while the pads of the solder paste process pay more attention to the regularity of the opening shape, to ensure that the solder paste spreads evenly during printing, reducing the risk of bridging and open soldering.
In actual operation, the pad edge of the red glue process needs to leave an appropriate margin to compensate for the shrinkage deformation after curing, while the pad size of the solder paste process needs to be precisely controlled to prevent excessive solder paste accumulation caused by too large openings, affecting the melting effect during Reflow Soldering.
The pad layout of the two processes also has obvious differences. The red glue process tends to arrange the pads centrally to improve positioning efficiency, while the solder paste process pays more attention to the spacing between pads to avoid short circuits during soldering, especially for fine-pitch devices, the minimum spacing between pads must comply with IPC standards.
On the production site, process problems caused by unreasonable pad design are often encountered, for example, the pad is too small in the red glue process resulting in insufficient glue adhesion, or the pad opening is too narrow in the solder paste process resulting in printing difficulties, these problems often need to be adjusted in combination with specific equipment parameters and material characteristics.
The surface treatment method of the pad will also affect the process effect, for example, the pads using ENIG or OSP process need to pay special attention to the compatibility of the glue and the metal surface during red glue mounting, while the solder paste process relies more on the flatness and cleanliness of the pad, ensuring that the solder paste can effectively wet and form a good solder joint.
For the pad design of different processes, it is also necessary to consider the convenience of subsequent inspection and rework. If the pads of the red glue process are too dense, it may increase the disassembly difficulty, while if the pads of the solder paste process are improperly designed, it may lead to misjudgment during inspection, so in practical applications, various factors should be comprehensively evaluated.
The rationality of the pad design directly determines the stability of the production process and the product yield. Whether it is the red glue or solder paste process, it must be optimized according to the actual production line conditions and product requirements, to avoid major losses caused by negligence of details.
