Q

What is the standard for solder paste tackiness?

A
There is no single fixed standard for solder-paste viscosity; it varies by model and powder size. SMT solder paste generally has a rotational viscosity of 600~1200Pa・s (at 25℃, at a specified spindle speed): coarse-powder paste is on the low side, fine-powder paste on the high side. Beyond viscosity, the thixotropic index matters even more, generally 0.4~0.6; it ensures the paste thins under shear during printing and quickly recovers its viscosity to hold shape afterward. Viscosity must be matched to the stencil thickness and the component lead pitch; the manufacturer's datasheet gives a reference range, and incoming material should be spot-checked.

The Solder Paste Viscosity standard is mainly based on its adhesion performance during the printing process, usually using the friction between the squeegee and the stencil as a reference indicator, while combining the stability after solder joint formation for evaluation. If the viscosity is insufficient, Solder Paste collapse or uneven printing is likely to occur.

In actual production, the viscosity of solder paste is closely related to the composition, particle size distribution and Flux activity of the solder paste. Different brands and models of solder paste have differences in viscosity performance, so suitable solder paste products must be selected according to specific process requirements.

During testing, manual squeegee operation is usually used to observe the fluidity of the solder paste on the stencil. If the solder paste is too thin, it will flow too fast, resulting in blurred printing edges; on the contrary, if the viscosity is too high, it may cause excessive squeegee resistance, affecting printing speed and accuracy.

The viscosity of solder paste is also affected by ambient temperature and humidity. In high temperature environments, the viscosity will decrease, while low temperatures may harden the solder paste, increasing printing difficulty. Therefore, operations need to be carried out in a constant temperature and humidity environment.

For high-density PCB boards, the solder paste viscosity standard also needs to take into account the printing requirements of fine-pitch components, ensuring that the solder paste can maintain a good shape after printing, preventing solder paste overflow or bridging, thereby improving the overall soldering quality.

In daily maintenance, regularly check the storage conditions and service life of the solder paste to avoid viscosity degradation caused by oxidation or contamination, while optimizing printing parameters such as squeegee pressure, speed and angle to further improve the stability of solder paste viscosity.

Through strict implementation of the solder paste viscosity standard, the printing defect rate can be effectively reduced, production efficiency and product reliability can be improved, meeting the requirements of modern SMT processes for high precision and high quality.
