How long can solder paste be left at room temperature before accelerated deterioration occurs?

More than 80% of the Solder Paste printing offset, insufficient solder, stringing, and even stencil clogging we see daily on SMT lines are related to solder paste being left at room temperature for too long. Especially when workshop heating is fully turned on in winter or air conditioning fails in summer, causing room temperature to exceed 25°C, solder paste originally rated for a 4-hour warm-up time often develops edge drying and abnormally increased central viscosity in just 2 hours. These changes are difficult to discern with the naked eye, but uneven metal powder distribution and Flux exudation traces can be clearly seen under a microscope.

Actual production line test data from JiajinYuan shows that after the same can of SN63/PB37 solder paste was left standing in a constant 22°C environment for 4 hours, its viscosity rose from the factory value of 800 Pa·s to 1150 Pa·s. If room temperature rises to 28°C and relative humidity reaches 65%RH, the viscosity soars to 1320 Pa·s in only 90 minutes. At this point, pushing the solder paste with a scraper feels noticeably sluggish, with delayed rebound and slight graininess, indicating that metal powder agglomeration has already begun. This physical state change is irreversible, and the original rheological properties cannot be restored even if the paste is put back into the refrigerator.

The shelf life of solder paste is not determined solely by the production date or refrigeration storage time, but jointly by "cold chain integrity" and "warm-up window". We require all solder paste to be stored sealed under refrigerated conditions (0~10°C), taken out in advance to warm up before use as specified in the process card, with warm-up time strictly controlled within 2~4 hours. Any paste exceeding the time limit must be scrapped and must not be put back on the machine to save costs, because the labor and line downtime losses from a batch of cold solder rework caused by solder paste failure far exceed the value of one can of solder paste.

On-site observations such as skin formation on the solder paste surface, deep grooves left by the scraper that are difficult to fill, and increased burrs on pad edges after printing are not equipment parameter issues, but typical signs that the solder paste has entered an accelerated deterioration stage. At this point, even adjusting scraper pressure, speed, or release distance will hardly improve the situation. The machine must be stopped immediately to replace the material and clean the stencil; otherwise, defects such as solder bridging, tombstoning, and excessive voids will occur in concentration within the next 300 boards.

We once neglected to time the solder paste warm-up, and for three consecutive days, excessive BGA solder joint void rates occurred on an LED strip line with a daily output of 20,000 boards. It was eventually traced back to solder paste taken out at 9 a.m. being left by the operation table until 1 p.m. before being put on the machine, experiencing two temperature fluctuations in between. The actual shelf life of the solder paste had been compressed by 60%. Later, we mandatorily installed electronic warm-up timers with audible and visual alarms, combined with quick viscosity checks of the first-piece solder paste each shift, and such problems have never recurred.
