Hand Soldering: Choose Solder Wire or Solder Filament? How to Select the Wire Diameter?

Choosing between Solder Wire and solder filament for Manual Soldering never depends on name preference, but on whether the solder joint heat capacity, pad area and operation rhythm match. Solder wire usually refers to solid or rosin-core solder with an outer diameter of 0.8mm or above, featuring fast heat conduction and large solder output, suitable for scenarios requiring continuous solder supply such as reworking transformer pins, grounding copper foil or repairing power modules. Solder filament mostly refers to thin-diameter rosin-core solder in the range of 0.3mm to 0.6mm, with the core diameter ratio stably maintained at 1.8% to 2.2%. It can complete precise wetting of 0402 resistors within 0.8 seconds of holding time at a soldering iron temperature of 320℃, and will not cause cold solder joints due to Flux splashing.

The first step in selecting the wire diameter is to check the relationship between the soldering tip size and the pad pitch. For example, when using a D24 knife-edge soldering tip to solder a QFP-100 chip, if 0.8mm Solder Wire is selected, not only will the solder melting speed fail to keep up with the drag soldering rhythm, but also adjacent pins will be bridged due to excessive solder volume. At this time, it is necessary to switch to 0.4mm solder filament and cooperate with a 0.2mm pointed soldering tip, so that the flux softens the oxide layer at the moment of contact, and the solder liquid immediately follows to fill the pad. The entire process relies on the mass production consistency of the solder filament core diameter tolerance controlled within ±0.01mm, rather than whether the operator's hand shakes.

Our production line has verified three sets of data: the yield rate of using 0.5mm solder filament to solder 0603 capacitors is 99.73%, the bridging rate rises to 4.2% after switching to 0.6mm, while 0.3mm can reduce bridging but causes frequent solder breaks, especially after continuous soldering of more than 12 solder joints, the flux residue increases significantly. This shows that thinner solder filament is not always better, and it is necessary to balance core diameter uniformity and flux activity retention capability. The JIAJINYUAN YJY-63A series solder filament has a core diameter fluctuation of ≤0.008mm and a halogen content of 0.075% under the 0.4mm specification, which exactly hits the golden balance point between SMT rework and manual fine-tuning.

When purchasing, you cannot only look at the nominal wire diameter marked on the package, you must use a micrometer to actually measure 10 segments each from the beginning and end of the entire roll. Because some manufacturers mark 0.38mm as 0.4mm and 0.52mm as 0.5mm, this deviation will directly cause the stepper motor to stall on the automatic solder feeder, and in manual soldering, it manifests as being easy to use for the first few meters and difficult to draw wire in the latter half of the roll. We require sampling inspection of 30 points per incoming roll, and if the deviation between the average value and the nominal value exceeds ±0.015mm, the entire roll will be rejected. After all, solder joint reliability does not depend on feel, but on the dimensional certainty of solder wire and solder filament from the factory to the soldering station throughout the process.

In actual operations, when encountering solder replenishment at the bottom of a BGA, it is necessary to use 0.3mm solder filament in combination with a composite process of hot air gun preheating + soldering iron point drag. At this time, the flux volatilization temperature of the solder filament needs to be 20℃ lower than that of the main soldering area to achieve preferential activation. Ordinary solder wire, due to its excessively large core diameter, cannot complete directional solder supply within a 0.3mm pitch. Therefore, the so-called selection is not an either-or choice, but to reversely lock the only feasible solder wire or solder filament specification according to the three constraints of PCB layer structure, component package form and equipment temperature control accuracy.
