The original intention of promoting no-clean Solder Paste was to reduce investment in cleaning equipment and consumption of water-based chemicals, but the problem of increased contact resistance caused by post-soldering residues during ICT testing has been repeatedly verified on multiple customer production lines. After a consumer electronics foundry switched to no-clean solder paste, the first-pass yield of ICT dropped from 99.2% to 97.6%, the average retest time increased by 3.8 seconds per board, directly pushing up the manpower allocation demand for the test line; we recommend prioritizing adjustment of the solder paste activity grade from ROL0 to ROL1, which is suitable for scenarios with packages above 0201 and ICT probe pressure ≥0.3N, can reduce the ion migration rate of residues by 42%, reduce the annual man-hours of misjudgment retesting per line by 420 hours, and the implementation risk only requires re-verifying the solder joint wetting angle of 5 main models, with a cycle ≤3 days.
The area ratio of stencil openings is increased from the traditional 0.65 to 0.72, combined with stepped squeegee pressure control (0.45MPa in the first printing stage, 0.38MPa in the second stage), which can effectively reduce the fluctuation of solder paste transfer rate, and is especially suitable for 0.4mm pitch QFN and 0.3mm pitch BGA devices. On an automotive electronics production line, the measured average post-soldering residue accumulation height was reduced from 8.3μm to 5.1μm, the ICT misjudgment rate decreased by 1.1 percentage points, corresponding to an annual saving of 32,000 yuan in manual retesting costs. However, it should be noted that this scheme raises the requirements for stencil tension stability; if the existing tension detection frequency is less than 2 times per shift, it may cause local solder shortage risks.
The wind speed in the Reflow Soldering cooling zone is reduced from 1.8m/s to 1.3m/s, combined with a 5℃ reduction in peak temperature under nitrogen atmosphere (235℃→230℃), which can reduce the generation of Flux thermal decomposition products without sacrificing Solder Joint Strength. It is suitable for SMT lines with nitrogen concentration ≥95% and daily output ≥1200 boards. After application on a power module production line, the flying probe test false alarm rate dropped from 0.87% to 0.33%, avoiding an annual loss of 26,000 yuan from erroneous rework. The only implementation constraint is to confirm that the existing cooling fan inverter supports 0.1Hz step adjustment, otherwise an external controller needs to be installed.
The cleaning cycle of ICT test fixture probes is shortened from every 4 hours to every 2.5 hours, and isopropyl alcohol cotton swab wiping is used instead of compressed air purging. It is suitable for scenarios with probe diameter ≥0.6mm and test point density >80 points/dm². After implementation on a wireless module production line, the standard deviation of probe contact impedance narrowed from 12.7Ω to 6.3Ω, reducing the number of functional test reruns caused by poor contact by 217 times per month, with an annualized benefit of 19,000 yuan. However, the cotton swab replacement records must be simultaneously included in the MES inspection checklist, otherwise there is a risk of missed execution.
Add 100% board surface ion contamination sampling inspection after AOI detection (IPC-J-STD-001 Appendix D method), with the sampling ratio set as the first 3 boards + last 2 boards + 3 random boards in the middle of each batch. It is suitable for main production lines with monthly output exceeding 500,000 boards. Based on this, a smart wearable production line identified the problem of molecular weight distribution shift of rosin resin between batches from 2 solder paste suppliers. After timely batch switching, the post-soldering residue chloride ion content was stabilized below 0.28μg/cm², avoiding subsequent batch ICT failures, and it is estimated to avoid potential customer complaint losses of over 150,000 yuan. The implementation threshold only requires purchasing a portable ion chromatograph (unit price 42,000 yuan) and training 1 inspector.
Finally, relax the open circuit threshold in the ICT test program from 20Ω to 35Ω, and embed a contact resistance trend analysis module in the software (automatically recording the TOP5 high resistance points per board). It is suitable for production lines that have deployed a test data traceability system. After implementation on a base station main control board production line, the misjudgment rate decreased by 0.9%, and it can warn of probe wear trends 12 hours in advance, saving 168 hours of fixture calibration downtime per year. However, it must be ensured that all test points have a dual-probe redundancy design, otherwise it may mask real open circuit defects.
