Q

How to Thin Thick Solder Paste

A
Do not arbitrarily add alcohol or rosin water to thickened paste — it will break the flux system. For slight thickening, extend stirring time per procedure so powder and flux remix fully and flow returns. If the thickening comes from low temperature, let the sealed paste warm to room temperature before stirring. If it comes from flux evaporation and paste drying out, the paste has degraded: discard it — do not force-dilute it and run it on the line.

When encountering the problem of Solder Paste Viscosity in actual production, first check whether the angle and pressure of the squeegee are appropriate, because the contact state between the squeegee and the stencil directly determines the spreading effect of the Solder Paste. At the same time, pay attention to whether the material of the squeegee meets the requirements to prevent the solder paste from being unable to be evenly distributed due to material issues.

Environmental temperature and humidity have a significant impact on the viscosity of solder paste. In high-temperature and high-humidity environments, solder paste easily absorbs moisture, leading to an increase in viscosity. At this time, the workshop temperature should be appropriately lowered and dehumidification equipment should be used to ensure that the working environment is within the standard range. At the same time, attention should also be paid to the storage conditions of the solder paste to avoid direct sunlight or proximity to heat sources.

During operation, if it is found that the fluidity of the solder paste is insufficient, you can try to use a special tool for stirring, but note that the stirring time should not be too long, otherwise it will cause the Flux component to volatilize and increase the viscosity instead. It is also necessary to select the appropriate stirring speed and method according to the model of the solder paste to avoid damaging its internal structure.

For solder paste that has already shown obvious viscosity, you can consider adding an appropriate amount of thinner for adjustment, but you must strictly follow the ratio instructions provided by the supplier to avoid welding defects caused by improper ratio. At the same time, pay attention to whether the type of thinner is compatible with the solder paste to prevent chemical reactions from affecting the welding performance.

In daily maintenance, regularly check the usage of the solder paste and timely clean up residues and impurities, which helps to maintain the fluidity of the solder paste. At the same time, pay attention to the shelf life of the solder paste and avoid using expired products. These details will have a profound impact on the final welding effect.

Solving the problem of solder paste viscosity requires starting from multiple aspects, including equipment parameter adjustment, environmental control, and operating procedures. Only by comprehensively applying these methods can the printing quality and welding reliability of the solder paste be effectively improved.
