Solder Paste Stirring and Preheating Specification, Standard Operation for SMT Production Line

A
Take paste from refrigeration and let it warm while sealed, generally 4~8 hours, until it approaches room temperature. After warming, open it and stir with mixing equipment for 2~4 minutes at a steady speed to avoid trapping large amounts of air. After stirring, inspect the paste - only run it on the line when there is no caking or separation. Control shop temperature and humidity, and never open paste before it has warmed. Record warming and opening times, ban expired paste from further use, and keep material traceability.

If Solder Paste is allowed to warm up naturally without monitoring the ambient temperature, when the average daily temperature difference in the workshop exceeds 5°C, the overtime rate for a single batch of solder paste during the warming process reaches 41%, leading to Flux stratification and viscosity attenuation, which in turn causes bridging and insufficient solder defects. After switching to a constant-temperature warming chamber (22±1°C) combined with batch label scanning for timing, the warming pass rate increased from 76% to 99.2%, saving approximately 87,000 yuan annually in solder paste scrap costs. The implementation risk is only the initial equipment investment of 23,000 yuan, and the recommended priority is P0.

If the solder paste stirring process uniformly uses an automatic mixer running for a fixed 60 seconds, it is prone to causing shear overload for solder paste with high metal content (over 90%), resulting in alloy powder particle breakage and accelerated oxidation. Field measurements show that under this mode, the printing yield decreases by 5.3% within 4 hours after opening the lid. By switching to a "low-temperature pre-stirring + touch start-stop" mode, which involves first stirring at a low speed of 300rpm for 20 seconds to soften the paste, then manually triggering a main stirring at 600rpm based on viscometer readings, the effective working window can be extended to 6.5 hours. This reduces the annual solder paste replacement frequency by 137 times per line, saving a total of 62,000 yuan in labor and material costs. The implementation risk only requires adding a portable viscometer (unit price 1,800 yuan), and the recommended priority is P0.

When the production line has not established a four-dimensional binding record of solder paste batch - warming - stirring - online launch, it often occurs that batch A is insufficiently warmed but mistakenly labeled with batch B's parameters, leading to a fluctuation in printing defect rate of ±4.6% for the same model of PCB across different shifts. After introducing a simple QR code batch card system, each solder paste can is affixed with a dynamic code containing the start and end times of warming, the stirrer, and the equipment number. Scanning the code allows retrieval of the historical operation chain, compressing the cross-shift traceability response time from an average of 47 minutes to 90 seconds. This indirectly reduces first-article scrap caused by repeated debugging, saving approximately 41,000 yuan annually in solder paste and substrate costs. The implementation risk is that the training period for production line employees to develop scanning habits is about 2 weeks, and the recommended priority is P1.

When workshop heating blows directly onto the Solder Paste Storage area in winter, the local temperature can reach 28°C, causing the actual viscosity of the warmed solder paste to be 15% below the lower specification limit. Increased printing release force leads to solder spikes. After installing a thermal feedback shielding curtain (automatically closes at a set temperature of 22°C), the temperature difference in the storage area is controlled within ±0.8°C. The Solder Paste Viscosity stability is improved to CPK=1.42, corresponding to a 2.1% decrease in insufficient solder defects. Calculated based on an output of 500,000 solder joints per month, this avoids approximately 35,000 yuan annually in rework labor costs. The implementation risk is that the curtain installation requires coordination with the HVAC team, and the recommended priority is P1.

When differentiated warming strategies are not implemented based on solder paste type, water-soluble solder paste prone to crystal precipitation when warmed below 18°C, while no-clean solder paste experiences excessively fast flux volatilization above 25°C. Uniformly executing at 22°C reduces the average effective usage time of both types of solder paste by 38%. By dividing the warming temperature zones into three categories based on chemical systems: water-soluble type (20±1°C), no-clean type (22±1°C), and lead-free high-temperature type (23±1°C), and configuring corresponding temperature-controlled boxes, the average usable time of each type of solder paste is restored to 94% of the nominal value. This reduces the number of unplanned material changes by 62 times annually, saving a total of 53,000 yuan in solder paste transition losses and line downtime costs. The implementation risk is that the sensors of three temperature-controlled boxes need to be calibrated, and the recommended priority is P0.

When the three-stage process of "stirring - standing - re-stirring" is not enforced after opening the solder paste lid, and the paste is directly loaded for printing, the internal bubble residue rate in the paste reaches as high as 17%, causing micro-hole clogging and shortened stencil life. After implementing the "3-3-3" action method (stirring for 3 minutes, standing for 3 minutes, secondary stirring for 3 minutes), the stencil cleaning frequency decreased from once every 8 hours to once every 12 hours. This saves 29,000 yuan annually per line in cleaning solution and labor costs, and improves solder paste utilization by 2.4%. The implementation risk is that the production line takt buffer time needs to be adjusted, and the recommended priority is P2.
