After we switched to silver-containing solder on the production line, we found that the bridging rate of 0402 resistor solder joints decreased by 37%. This is not because silver lowers the melting point, but because after silver is incorporated into the tin matrix, it significantly reduces the surface tension of liquid tin, which accelerates the spreading speed of molten solder on OSP copper surfaces near the 183°C eutectic temperature and reduces the wetting angle. Therefore, under the same printing parameters, Solder Paste collapse is more uniform. Especially on 0.3mm pitch QFN bottom pads, silver-containing solder can fill an additional 0.012mm thick gap, which manifests as a 22% reduction in false cold solder joint reports during AOI inspection.
Solder joints made with ordinary tin wire developed microcracks as early as the 850th cycle during thermal cycling testing, while silver-containing solder joints lasted until the 1240th cycle before initial-stage IMC layer delamination occurred at the bottom of BGA balls. This is because the Ag3Sn intermetallic compound formed by silver and tin is finer than the Cu6Sn5 at the pure tin-copper interface, and its thermal expansion coefficient is closer to that of copper foil, resulting in more gradual stress relief. However, it should be noted that silver-containing solder is more sensitive to reflow peak temperature. When the furnace temperature zone exceeds 235°C, Ag3Sn particles will coarsen and instead weaken strength. We once had to lower the peak temperature of the furnace profile for a certain automotive module from 242°C to 233°C to stabilize yield.
The residue of silver-containing solder is light yellow and more easily dissolved by cleaning agents, which is related to silver ions inhibiting rosin resin carbonization. However, the surface gloss of solder joints after cleaning is lower than that of ordinary tin wire, because silver promotes finer solder crystallization, and more equiaxed grains are visible under a microscope. Although this structure improves vibration resistance, it requires recalibration of the AOI grayscale recognition threshold; otherwise, normal solder joints will be misjudged as insufficient solder.
Colleagues in the procurement department reported that the unit price of silver-containing solder is 18% higher, but after comprehensively calculating rework labor hours and customer complaint costs, the actual cost reduction per board is 0.37 yuan. The key is to match the corresponding specifications. For example, when 0.3mm diameter silver-containing tin wire is used for hand soldering, the wire feed feel is relatively stiff, so the soldering iron temperature must be increased from 320°C to 335°C to maintain the same wetting speed, while ordinary tin wire already exhibits obvious Flux splashing at this temperature.
We have verified the effects of different silver contents. Tin wire with 0.3% silver shows limited improvement in solder joint pinholes during wave soldering, but the 0.7% silver version can complete full pin wrapping within 3 seconds of tin dipping. However, when the silver content exceeds 0.9%, the increase in solder viscosity leads to more frequent nozzle clogging. Therefore, we finally selected the window value of 0.65%±0.05%, which sits exactly at the balance point between the wetting performance inflection point and equipment compatibility.
