When replacing the Wi-Fi chip on an iPhone motherboard, we found that applying Solder Paste Flux from a syringe to BGA pads with 0.4mm pitch can precisely cover each solder joint, while bottled paste easily forms strings and tails when picked up with a fine brush, leading to excessive Flux residue between adjacent pads, which induces solder balls and bridging during the reflow stage. Especially when handling the HiSilicon Hi1103 RF module equipped in the Huawei Mate series, this difference is directly reflected in the first-pass soldering yield: the syringe-packed batch has a stable yield of 98.2%, while the bottled one fluctuates between 92% and 95.7%.
Production line test data shows that the same model of Solder Paste flux, in syringe packaging, can be used continuously for 26 days after opening while maintaining stable viscosity, while the bottled version shows obvious stratification starting from the 7th day after opening, with the upper layer becoming thinner and the lower layer caking, and the original thixotropy cannot be restored even after stirring. This is related to its light-shielding sealed aluminum-plastic composite tube structure; bottled versions mostly use a transparent PET bottle with an inner stopper design, where UV penetration accelerates the aging of rosin resin. We once compared the aging curves of two packages of JJY JAY-808 in a constant temperature and humidity chamber: the viscosity attenuation rate of the syringe-packed version at 30℃/60%RH is only 0.35%/day, while the bottled version reaches 1.2%/day.
Repair technicians reported that bottled paste needs to be pre-warmed for half an hour to be picked up normally when the room temperature is below 15℃ in winter, while the syringe-packed version, due to its controllable extrusion force, can achieve a continuous paste line with a diameter of 0.15mm by adjusting thumb pressure even in a 10℃ environment. This is particularly critical for reworking 0201 package capacitors on Xiaomi Civi series motherboards, as their pad area is only 0.04mm², and any slight deviation will cause the solder to fail to wet or form voids. When picking up paste with a bottled version, the amount of paste on the brush tip is uncontrollable: the first 3 solder joints after a single dip are full, but then it quickly dries up and becomes less.
We have counted the monthly average consumable data of 27 authorized repair centers in Huaqiangbei, Shenzhen: the average paste consumption per repair at sites using syringe-packed versions is 0.08ml, while the bottled version reaches 0.14ml. The extra 0.06ml is mainly wasted in brush cleaning, table wiping, and repeated dipping processes. Moreover, if the bottled version is not sealed in time after opening, the volatilization loss can reach 11% of the initial weight within 3 days. Especially during the plum rain season in the south, when the air humidity exceeds 80%RH, condensed water at the bottle mouth will also mix into the paste and cause local corrosion, a risk that is eliminated by the one-way valve design of the syringe-packed version.
For technicians who need to frequently switch between repair models, the syringe-packed version can also be used with an electric dispensing machine to achieve 0.02ml-level quantitative dispensing. For example, when replacing the periscope telephoto module on an OPPO Find X7 Ultra, selective fluxing must be performed on the VCM motor pads, a requirement that the bottled version cannot meet in terms of positioning accuracy. When connected to a pneumatic dispensing valve, the syringe-packed version has a repeatability accuracy of ±0.005ml. This is also the core reason why Foxconn's Zhengzhou factory fully replaced bottled versions with syringe-packed versions on its iRepair production line: it is not because they are expensive, but because every 0.1% reduction in the rework rate means 37 fewer complete unit disassembly per day.
