As an indispensable material in Surface Mount Technology, SMT Solder Paste's types and properties directly affect soldering results. Common Solder Paste types include Leaded Solder Paste, lead-free solder paste, and special functional solder paste, each with clear application scenarios. For example, leaded solder paste is commonly used in high-density circuit boards due to its low melting point, while lead-free solder paste better meets environmental protection requirements, but requires adjustment of the Reflow Soldering temperature profile.
In actual production, the selection of solder paste depends not only on the physical characteristics of solder joints, but also on the thermal sensitivity of components, the adaptability of the printing process, and subsequent inspection standards. For example, low-viscosity solder paste is required for high-precision printing, while high-viscosity solder paste is needed for thick stencils or deep-hole structures to ensure filling performance. Meanwhile, the activity level of the Flux also affects the cleanliness after soldering.
The storage conditions of solder paste are equally critical. Unopened solder paste should be stored in a refrigerated environment at 4~10℃. After opening, it must be used within the specified time, and avoid direct sunlight and high-temperature environments, otherwise it will cause solder oxidation or abnormal viscosity, affecting printing quality. Meanwhile, attention should also be paid to the stirring frequency during the use of solder paste; frequent stirring will destroy the uniform internal structure of the solder paste, leading to uneven printing.
In actual operations, the selection and application of SMT Solder paste often require comprehensive evaluation combined with specific equipment parameters, process flows, and product requirements. For example, high-speed printing machines have high requirements for the thixotropy of solder paste, while wave soldering focuses more on the fluidity of solder paste. Therefore, engineers need rich experience to find the most suitable solder paste type among numerous options, ensuring the stability of the production process and yield rate.
It is worth noting that as the electronics industry pays more attention to environmental protection and sustainable development, more and more enterprises are beginning to use halogen-free or low-halogen solder paste. Although this type of solder paste is slightly more expensive, it can effectively reduce the emission of harmful substances and comply with international environmental regulations. Meanwhile, some new types of solder paste also have additional functions such as moisture resistance and oxidation prevention, further improving the reliability of the soldering process.
