The primary cause of soldering failures for 01005 components is not reflow temperature profile deviation, but uncontrolled fluid behavior of Solder Paste on tiny pads. When the proportion of metal particles larger than 6μm in the solder paste exceeds 3%, excess solder material accumulates at the pad edge during squeegee extrusion. These enriched areas splatter violently in the early stage of reflow to form solder balls, while simultaneously bridging adjacent pads to cause solder shorts.
Stencil aperture and solder paste particle size must be strictly matched
When we used a 0.1mm thick laser-etched stencil to print 01005 pads, we found that if the solder paste does not reach T6 grade (i.e., D50 > 5.2μm), even if the squeegee pressure is reduced from 4.5kg to 3.2kg, continuous solder paste trailing is still visible outside the pad under a microscope after printing. This trailing inevitably collapses and bridges during reflow. After switching to JJY T6 Solder Paste, under the same parameters, the trailing length was compressed from 38μm to within 9μm, and more than 95% of solder joints had no solder ball residue.
Thixotropic index affects 01005 Component Soldering yield more than viscosity value
Actual measurements show that when the apparent viscosity of the solder paste at 25℃ is 780Pa·s but the thixotropic index is only 0.62, the coefficient of variation of solder paste volume after printing is as high as 18.7%, far exceeding the 7% upper limit specified by IPC-7527. JJY T6 solder paste stabilizes the thixotropic index in the range of 0.78±0.03. Combined with a 120° squeegee angle and 8mm/s printing speed, the standard deviation of solder volume on 01005 pads is controlled within ±2.3ng, which is the fundamental prerequisite for preventing solder shorts.
Reflow nitrogen dew point must be controlled below 40℃
Even if the solder paste and stencil fully meet the standards, if the dew point in the nitrogen reflow oven is higher than -38℃, the trace moisture remaining in the Flux will vaporize sharply in the 150℃ holding zone, pushing the molten solder paste to displace outward from the pad. In our verification at a factory in Dongguan, we found that when the dew point rose from -36℃ to -33℃, the solder short rate of 01005 capacitors directly doubled. After replacing the nitrogen drying system with a dual-tower switching type, the dew point stabilized at -42℃, the solder short rate fell back to 86ppm and remained without rebound for three consecutive weeks.
Pad design and solder paste collaborative optimization cannot be separated
If the pads for 01005 components are designed at full size according to the IPC-7351B standard, the risk of solder shorts is instead exacerbated. We mandatorily require shortening the pad length by 5μm, narrowing the width by 3μm, and scaling the stencil aperture at a 1:0.95 area ratio. At this point, the wetting and spreading radius of JJY T6 solder paste on the pad is constrained within 12μm, which not only ensures Solder Joint Strength but also eliminates the possibility of bridging. This combination has been batch-verified on 12 production lines, with the average first-pass yield increased to 99.92%.
