Yield Improvement Solution for 01005 Component Soldering on Small Precision Consumer Electronics Boards

Yield Improvement Solution for 01005 Component Soldering on Small Precision Consumer Electronics Boards

01005 Component Soldering failures in mass production are mainly manifested as a tombstoning rate exceeding 12%, solder joint voidage greater than 35%, and post-placement offset exceeding ±25μm. These problems are not caused by a single link, but are the result of the combined effect of three factors: mismatch between stencil aperture size and Solder Paste particle size, lag in vacuum response of the mounter nozzle, and imbalance of hot and cold air ratio in Reflow Soldering. After the stencil aperture was changed from the conventional 0.25×0.13mm to 0.22×0.11mm, the solder paste volume decreased by 18.7%, but unexpectedly improved the stability of liquid bridging during reflow.

We insist on using JJY J-105F solder paste instead of other products with nominally better fineness, because the combination of 88.7% metal content and 420Pa·s viscosity is exactly suitable for the shear thinning response required for 01005 component soldering. When the printing speed is set to 25mm/s and the demolding rate is 1.2mm/s, the filling rate of this solder paste under a 0.08mm thick stencil can reach 93.4%, while switching to a 0.1mm stencil will cause the filling rate to drop sharply to 76.1% with increased edge burrs.

In the placement process, the constant Z-axis downward pressure setting in general mode must be turned off, and the dynamic compensation logic based on the feedback of the nozzle pressure sensor should be adopted instead. When the PCB warpage deformation exceeds 0.08mm, the downward pressure is automatically reduced by 0.15N; otherwise, the 01005 component is prone to offset caused by transverse shear force the moment it contacts the pad. Field measurement shows that this adjustment reduces the proportion of offset out-of-tolerance from 31.2% to 6.8%.

For the reflow soldering furnace temperature curve, the heating slope in the 150℃~183℃ range must be strictly controlled within 0.8℃/s. Too fast will cause the Flux to boil violently and lift the component, while too slow will aggravate solder paste oxidation. We achieved precise control by reducing the heating power of the second temperature zone by 12% and increasing the blower speed of the third temperature zone by 8% under the premise of constant chain speed, while compressing the peak temperature window within the range of 235±2℃ to avoid microcracks in the 01005 package ceramic body caused by local overheating.

The stencil cleaning frequency must be bound to the solder paste batch, and an ultrasonic + IPA dual-mode cleaning must be enforced every 600 printed boards. If delayed to more than 800 boards, a residual dry solder paste film with a thickness of 3.2μm can be seen under the microscope at the position corresponding to the 01005 pad, which directly raises the actual solder deposition height of subsequent printing and increases the probability of solder joint bridging by 4.7 times. This phenomenon is particularly prominent around 0.35mm pitch BGA.

All parameter adjustments must be reversely verified based on the original AOI image, and cannot rely solely on SPC statistical values. For example, when AOI shows that 5 consecutive boards have weak reflection signals at the same position, the line must be stopped immediately to check whether the corresponding stencil aperture has 0.005mm level wear. This kind of micro-damage is invisible in conventional visual inspection, but is enough to make the soldering wetting angle of 01005 components deviate from the ideal value by more than 7°.
