Practical Operation Method of Solder Wire Feeding for Manual Soldering of Multi-Pin Connectors

A
For hand soldering of multi-pin connectors, choose thin-diameter solder wire and match the iron tip to the pin pitch. First tin the pads with a thin layer to hold the pins in place. Bring the iron tip into contact with both the pin and pad at the same time; once the pad heats up, feed in the wire slowly so the pad's heat melts the solder. Apply only a small amount to each pin to avoid bridging. After soldering, clean off excess flux residue and control the iron temperature to prevent the connector plastic from overheating and deforming.

During production line commissioning, we found that the first-pass yield of Manual Soldering for 0.5mm pitch 24-pin pin header connectors has long been below 87%, with main defects concentrated in three categories: solder bridging, cold solder joints, and pin solder spikes. The root cause is not insufficient operator skill, but the mismatch between the Solder Wire feeding path and soldering iron heat transfer, leading to a per-joint solder waste rate of 19% and an average rework frequency of 1.4 times per joint. Therefore, starting from the linkage of the three key elements—heat source, solder, and Flux—we have sorted out 6 quantifiable and executable actions, all based on existing equipment and conventional materials, with no additional investment required.

The first action is to replace the conventional C-type soldering iron tip with a K-type pointed tip, applicable to all board-to-board Connector Soldering scenarios with pin pitch ≤0.8mm. This action increases single-point heating concentration by 40%, reduces thermal interference between adjacent pads, and the measured solder bridging rate decreases by 58%. However, the soldering iron temperature must be simultaneously lowered from 330℃ to 305℃ to prevent pad peeling; otherwise, the risk of PCB solder mask blistering increases by 3 times. It is recommended to prioritize implementation during the new product introduction stage.

The second action is to replace 0.5mm diameter solder wire with 0.3mm diameter solder wire, suitable for micro-connectors with pin cross-sectional area ≤0.08mm². Although the unit price per spool is 12% higher, the number of solder joints completed per meter increases by 2.3 times, comprehensive solder loss decreases by 32%, and the training cycle for new operators is shortened by 2 days due to more controllable solder feeding volume. However, the flux model must be simultaneously replaced with RMA-123 to match the lower Solder Paste activity requirement; otherwise, the poor wetting rate will rise to over 15%.

The third action is to lightly wipe the pad surface with a sponge dipped in a small amount of no-clean flux before solder feeding, only applicable to OSP process bare copper pads in workshops with ambient humidity >60%. This action shortens the first tinning time by 0.8 seconds per joint, saving 21 minutes of labor time per shift. However, if used on immersion gold boards, it will cause gold layer corrosion, so the applicable board surface treatment type must be clearly marked in the process card.

The fourth action is to adopt the "point-contact solder feeding method" to replace the traditional continuous solder feeding, i.e., wait 0.5 seconds after the soldering iron tip contacts the pad before feeding solder, applicable to IDC connectors with plastic positioning posts. This action improves the stability of solder ball formation, reduces the cold solder joint rate by 44%, but requires the operator's hand tremor amplitude to be <0.15mm. It is recommended to use an anti-shake wrist rest; otherwise, it will instead increase the probability of solder spikes.

The fifth action is to move the solder wire storage position from the side of the soldering iron stand to 15cm in front of the operator's left side, applicable to production lines with a daily average soldering volume >300 joints. This action compresses the single-point cycle by 0.3 seconds by shortening the arm movement distance, saving 142 working hours per year based on 1200 joints per shift. However, the EHS passage width must be re-planned to prevent tripping risks, and the transformation cost only requires 3 standard universal fixtures.

The sixth action is to compulsorily clean the soldering iron tip with an alcohol cotton swab every 20 solder joints, applicable to high-reliability connectors with halogen-containing flux and solder joint density >8 joints/cm². This action reduces cold solder joint defects caused by oxide layer accumulation by 71%. However, if halogen-free flux is used, the cleaning frequency can be relaxed to once every 35 joints; excessive cleaning will instead accelerate the wear of the iron-plated layer on the soldering iron tip.

Comprehensively evaluating the input-output ratio and implementation threshold of the 6 actions, we recommend executing them in the following priority order: K-type soldering iron tip replacement (P0), point-contact solder feeding method (P1), solder wire diameter switching (P2), flux pre-wiping (P3), solder wire positioning optimization (P4), soldering iron tip cleaning frequency control (P5). Among them, the P0 action can complete line change verification within 4 hours, while the P5 action requires cooperation with the SPC data acquisition system to accurately determine the effect; production lines without this system deployed should postpone implementation.
