Q

What is the storage temperature of solder paste?

A
The standard storage temperature for paste is 2~8℃, refrigerated, to prevent heat from accelerating flux evaporation and powder oxidation. Do not freeze it — freezing breaks the rheological system and causes separation on thawing. Store sealed, on a first-in-first-out basis, with storage-in times recorded. Before use, let the sealed paste return to room temperature — generally 4~8 hours — and do not open the lid during recovery, to prevent condensation and moisture uptake. For temporary workshop storage, control temperature and humidity; record opening time and discard per procedure once the open life is exceeded.

The storage temperature of Solder Paste directly affects its stability and performance. In actual production, the storage environment must be strictly controlled to avoid component separation or oxidation caused by excessive temperature differences. Solder Paste Storage temperature is generally required to be within the range of 5~25℃; exceeding this range may cause viscosity changes or Flux failure.

In daily operations, solder paste should preferably be stored in a dedicated refrigerated cabinet, away from direct sunlight or heat sources, while ensuring sealed packaging to prevent moisture intrusion. If solder paste has been stored for more than 48 hours, its condition should be regularly checked, including whether there is caking, obvious stratification, or abnormal odor.

Excessively high solder paste storage temperature will cause rapid volatilization of the flux, reducing activity during soldering, while excessively low temperature will make the solder paste overly viscous, affecting printing accuracy and coverage. Therefore, it is recommended to set up a dedicated solder paste storage area in the workshop, equipped with temperature and humidity monitoring equipment, to ensure that environmental parameters meet standards.

For solder paste that has been opened and used, more attention must be paid to its storage conditions. It is generally recommended to complete printing operations within 24 hours; otherwise, its applicability needs to be re-evaluated. If the solder paste shows obvious dryness, hardening, or a gritty texture, it can no longer be used, to avoid soldering defects or an increase in product defect rates.

In practical applications, different brands and types of solder paste may have slightly different storage temperature requirements. For details, refer to the technical manual provided by the supplier, but the general principle remains the same. Meanwhile, solder paste storage temperature management should be incorporated into the SMT process control flow, with regular inspections and records, to ensure the stability and reliability of the production process.

Solder paste storage temperature not only affects its physical properties, but also relates to the wettability and solder joint quality in subsequent soldering processes. Therefore, when selecting a storage solution, environmental conditions, usage frequency, and production needs should be comprehensively considered to formulate scientific and reasonable management measures.

In daily work, operators should have basic knowledge of solder paste storage, to avoid material waste or product quality issues caused by negligence. Especially on high-density, high-precision SMT production lines, solder paste storage temperature control is an important link that cannot be ignored.

The reasonable setting and strict implementation of solder paste storage temperature are the foundation for ensuring the smooth progress of the soldering process, directly determining the yield and reliability of the final product, and must be given sufficient attention.
