Q

How to Clean Solder Paste Thoroughly

A
No-clean paste generally needs no cleaning, as its residue is low. Paste that does require cleaning: water-soluble paste is cleaned with deionized water using ultrasonic or spray methods; solvent-type paste is cleaned with the corresponding organic solvent. Clean as soon as possible after soldering, so residue does not absorb moisture and corrode over time. Dry thoroughly after cleaning to prevent cleaner or water residue. For high-reliability products, run an ionic-contamination test after cleaning to confirm residue meets limits. Do not clean arbitrarily with alcohol — some paste residue is insoluble in alcohol and will not come clean.

Solder Paste is widely used in SMT production, but improper cleaning can leave residues that affect circuit performance. Therefore, solder paste cleaning is a critical step, and the appropriate cleaning method must be selected according to specific process requirements.

In actual production, solder paste residues are mainly composed of rosin, resin, and Flux. These components can form different types of stains under varying conditions, so targeted solvents must be selected during cleaning, such as ethanol, isopropanol, or dedicated solder paste cleaners, while controlling concentration and temperature.

During operation, first use a soft cloth or sponge dipped in an appropriate amount of cleaning agent to gently wipe, then use lint-free paper to absorb residual liquid, avoiding direct spraying that may cause liquid to seep into precision components. In addition, ensure thorough drying after cleaning to prevent moisture from causing short circuits or corrosion.

For complex structures or high-density PCBs, an ultrasonic cleaning machine can be used for auxiliary treatment, but the frequency and time must be adjusted to avoid damaging components with excessive energy. Also, pay attention to the replacement cycle of the cleaning solution to prevent impurity accumulation from reducing cleaning effectiveness.

Solder paste cleaning not only affects appearance quality but also relates to the long-term reliability of products. Therefore, operating procedures must be strictly followed, and equipment status must be regularly inspected to ensure a stable and controllable cleaning process.

If residual traces are still found after cleaning, the cleaning plan must be re-evaluated. If necessary, adjust the solvent type or add pre-treatment steps, while recording data from each cleaning to provide a basis for subsequent optimization.

Solder paste cleaning is a systematic task that requires flexible responses based on actual conditions to ensure the cleaning effect meets process requirements.
