Solder Manufacturer Offers OEM/ODM Customization of Solder Formulation Specifications

When adapting wave soldering processes for automotive electronics customers, we found that standard Sn63Pb37 solder produced a large number of solder balls and bridges after the PCB passed through the wave soldering machine. The root cause was that its melting point overlapped with the thermal decomposition temperature of residual organic matter left after the customer's existing Reflow Soldering process. Therefore, we required the Solder Manufacturer to simultaneously adjust the rosin ratio and activation temperature range of the Flux, while controlling the lead content in the alloy within ±0.15% to pass AEC-Q200 certification.

After receiving an urgent order from a medical equipment manufacturer, JJY completed ODM sampling of Sn96.5Ag3.0Cu0.5 lead-free Solder Wire within three days. This was not a simple replacement of the silver-copper ratio, but a simultaneous optimization of the annealing temperature curve during the wire drawing process and the flux injection pressure parameters. Otherwise, the solder wire would frequently break on the automatic wire feeder, a problem that could not be exposed at all using a Manual Soldering iron in the laboratory.

A customer proposed developing low-temperature solder for flexible Circuit Board Soldering. Instead of directly recommending the Sn42Bi58 eutectic alloy, we first measured that the glass transition temperature of their FPC substrate was 132°C. Then, combined with the actual temperature zone distribution data of their reflow oven, we locked the peak temperature of the final customized formulation at 138°C ± 2°C. This ensures both wettability and prevents the coverlay from wrinkling or delaminating.

An industrial controller customer reported a high rate of cold solder joints. We brought a portable XRF to the site for testing and found that the so-called "high-purity" Solder Paste they were using had a measured metal content of only 88.3%, far below the nominal 89.5%. We immediately launched the OEM customization process. Without changing the original printing parameters, we increased the metal powder sphericity of JJY's standard formulation from 92% to 96% and tightened the particle size distribution D50 to 22±1μm. The cold solder joint rate dropped by 67% within the same week.

If solder manufacturers only provide general-purpose models, they cannot address real production line challenges such as the mismatch in coefficient of thermal expansion between BGA underfill and solder. JJY's approach is to import the customer's CTE test reports, stencil aperture data, and real-time nitrogen concentration records into the alloy simulation system, and reverse-engineer a composite fine-tuning plan requiring the addition of 0.012% indium and 0.003% germanium, rather than adding elements based on guesswork.

When customizing Sn99.3Cu0.7 welding rods for a photovoltaic inverter manufacturer, we specifically enhanced the oxidation inhibition ability of copper in the molten state. This is because their Dip Soldering bath is cleaned less than twice a day, and ordinary solder forms a gray-black oxide film up to 0.8mm thick on the liquid surface. In contrast, the customized version maintains an oxide layer thickness of less than 0.2mm even after 16 hours of continuous operation, which directly reduces downtime for slag removal.

All customization is based on a closed loop of measured production line data. For example, a customer required the solder to have a wetting angle <25° in a nitrogen environment. We used a high-speed camera to capture the entire spreading process on an IPC-B-25B test board and simultaneously collected the oxygen content fluctuation curve in the oven chamber. Finally, we precisely controlled the addition amount of diethyl adipate in the flux at 0.73wt%; a deviation exceeding ±0.02wt% would lead to uneven wetting.
