We discovered on the production line that after the same model of PCBA continuously reported bridging defects in AOI, we immediately retrieved the material batch code in the MES system and found that the LOT number of this batch of Solder Paste was completely different from the batch used in the previous cycle, while the stencil number and reflow oven temperature zone parameters remained unchanged. This quickly ruled out equipment factors and confirmed that the problem stemmed from the low viscosity and insufficient thixotropy of the new batch of solder paste; this judgment relies on entering the batch number, stirring time, activation time, and opening time into the system from the moment the solder paste is requisitioned, and associating them in real time with the shift operation records of each line.
When placement nozzle wear causes offset-type defects, if a mapping relationship between nozzle number, usage duration, replacement frequency, and corresponding product model is not established, it is impossible to distinguish whether a single nozzle is aging or the entire group is experiencing calibration drift. The practice on the JiajinYuan production line is to laser-engrave a unique ID on each nozzle. After each material change or maintenance, a technician scans the code for registration, and the system automatically compares historical placement offset trends. When the same nozzle triggers an X/Y-axis compensation out-of-limit alarm three consecutive times, it is forcibly deactivated.
Stencil life management must also be tied to batches. We once encountered a sudden increase in the tombstoning rate of 0201 components. Investigation revealed that it was not a change in printing parameters, but rather that the currently used stencil had exceeded the 50,000-print threshold, and slight deformation of the aperture edges caused uneven solder paste release. Since the stencil's LOT number, first online time, cumulative print count, and cleaning records were all fully queryable in the system, we were able to immediately identify the problem as tension attenuation after the 7th cleaning, rather than manual misadjustment of squeegee pressure.
Material batch traceability is not simply about labeling; it must bring solder paste batches, stencil LOTs, nozzle IDs, furnace temperature profile numbers, and AOI inspection images together under the same timestamp. For example, during re-inspection of an NG board, we found that the first 15 boards in the same furnace were normal, while the last 12 had cold solder joints. System traceback showed that the solder paste mixer had just completed an automatic refill action during that period, with a deviation of 18% in the mixing ratio of old and new solder paste. Since the mixer's refill trigger signal was strongly associated with furnace number and board number in the database, this allowed the root cause to surface.
SMT quality control without batch closed-loop management is like a blind man feeling an elephant. All solder paste barrels going online at JiajinYuan are labeled with dual codes: a 1D barcode for production line scanning and entry, and a 2D QR code storing the supplier's factory inspection report, measured silver content, Tg temperature point, and other raw data. This information can be directly retrieved and compared during defect analysis, avoiding repeated requests for documents from suppliers that delay production line recovery. Stencil inbound and outbound management also uses RFID chips embedded in the handle; inserting it into a handheld terminal immediately reads the last three tension test values, eliminating the loss of paper records or transcription errors.
