SMT Placement Line Material Control to Prevent Component Mixing and Wrong Material

SMT Placement Line Material Control to Prevent Component Mixing and Wrong Material

We found on the JJY SMT placement line that 83% of material mismatch incidents occur during material changeover, of which 61% stem from residual material not being cleared from the feeder station, 19% are caused by missed manual scanning of loose pin components, and the rest are directly related to blurry material labels or mismatched work order BOM versions. Therefore, the material changeover process must be broken down into a tightly coupled five-step workflow of "confirm, clear, verify, load, validate"; missing any step will lead to rework of the entire subsequent batch.

Feeder stations must strictly follow the "clear first, photograph second, bind third" rule

Before each material changeover, the residual material in the station must be completely cleared with a suction pen and visually confirmed to be free of foreign matter, then the current state of the station must be photographed with a mobile phone and uploaded to the MES system. Finally, the barcode of the new material reel must be forcibly bound to the feeder number and station position in the system; placement cannot start if binding fails. This can eliminate the phenomenon of repeatedly loading resistors or capacitors of different specifications on the same feeder, and is particularly effective in high-risk areas where 0201/0402 small-size resistors and capacitors are mixed.

Loose pin components are subject to the "dual-person dual-signature + first-article three-level comparison" rule

For loose materials such as unpackaged through-hole electrolytic capacitors and DIP pin headers, the operator and IPQC must jointly complete label signing, physical reel confirmation, and system inbound record verification to ensure consistency across all three parties before the materials can be put into production. After the first article of each shift is placed, the placement position, polarity direction, and body silkscreen must be compared with BOM parameters simultaneously; if any of the three does not match, the line must be stopped immediately to trace all boards placed in the previous hour.

Work orders and material labels must be from the same source, same version, and verified in real time

All material labels for production must be automatically generated by the MES system according to the effective BOM of the day; historically printed labels or handwritten supplements are prohibited. The system automatically compares whether the current reel code is completely consistent with the code specified in the work order before the feeder starts; if inconsistent, the placement action will be locked and an alarm will be triggered. This hard interception has reduced the material mismatch rate from 0.17‰ to 0.023‰ at the JJY Dongguan plant.

Material return actions must reversibly restore the initial state

When the production line is temporarily paused or switched to another order, returned materials must be restored to their original packaging state at the time of requisition, including clearing the feeder, returning unused reels, updating system inventory quantities, and synchronously marking the remaining quantity and batch number. This avoids the problem of excessive temperature drift parameters caused by the next work order mistakenly picking up old batch materials due to delayed return information, which is particularly critical in the placement of automotive-grade MLCCs and high-precision operational amplifiers.
