When the production line continuously experiences more than 10 instances of cold solder joints, solder bridges, or tombstoning at the same position, the batch defect rapid response mechanism must be activated immediately, rather than first adjusting equipment parameters or replacing Solder Paste, because the root cause of most SMT defects does not lie in a single material or individual piece of equipment, but in the superposition of coupling deviations across the three stages of printing, placement, and reflow.
Focus on solder paste printing consistency verification
We first use a 20x microscope to spot-check the solder paste deposition morphology at the stencil openings of the first 5 and last 5 boards, focusing on comparing the degree of edge collapse, center height difference, and surrounding splash distribution. If the solder paste thickness fluctuation between the front and rear batches exceeds ±15%, and the squeegee pressure shows no abnormality within the set value ±0.2kg, squeegee wear can be basically ruled out, and we instead check whether the stencil tension is below 35N/cm or the support platform levelness deviation is greater than 0.08mm.
Simultaneously verify systematic offset of placement coordinates
Retrieve the X/Y direction offset mean and standard deviation from the AOI inspection report. When a certain model's feeder station shows a continuous 10 boards with X-direction offset mean reaching -0.12mm and standard deviation expanding to 0.045mm, it indicates that the nozzle vacuum attenuation has exceeded the limit. At this point, the machine must be shut down immediately to replace the corresponding nozzle and clean the vacuum pipeline; software compensation alone is not sufficient, otherwise the tombstoning rate in subsequent reflow will increase by more than 3 times.
Reflow Soldering profile must be measured rather than relying on set values
Use the JIAJINYUAN KIC-2600 furnace temperature tester to measure the current PCB board surface temperature profile, focusing on whether the heating rate is between 1.2℃/s and 3.0℃/s, whether the soaking zone maintains 150℃±5℃ for more than 90 seconds, and whether the peak temperature is stable at 235℃±3℃. If the measured peak temperature is 4.2℃ lower than the set value and the soaking segment time is shortened by 18 seconds, it is highly likely that temperature feedback distortion is caused by thermocouple aging, and the temperature measurement probe must be replaced before retesting.
Establish a mapping table between defect characteristics and process parameters
Cold solder joints are often accompanied by insufficient solder paste volume and insufficient reflow time. Solder bridges frequently occur when stencil opening size exceeds the standard combined with excessive placement pressure. Tombstoning is highly correlated with a difference in wetting rate between the two ends of the component exceeding 0.8s, and this difference is jointly driven by decreased solder paste activity and PCB pad oxidation. Therefore, every abnormality must be synchronously recorded with the solder paste batch number, stencil usage count, placement head number, and original measured furnace temperature data, forming a traceable closed-loop SMT defect archive.
