ASEAN Foreign Trade Solder Seaworthy Constant-Temperature Packaging Ensures Stable Long-Distance Transportation of Solder Paste

ASEAN Foreign Trade Solder Seaworthy Constant-Temperature Packaging Ensures Stable Long-Distance Transportation of Solder Paste

ASEAN Foreign Trade Solder exports often face shipping cycles of over 45 days, passing through the high-humidity area of the South China Sea, the high-temperature zone of the Strait of Malacca, and multiple loading and unloading operations at the Singapore transit warehouse. If only ordinary corrugated boxes with ice packs are used, the Solder Paste will show obvious delamination on the 12th day. Under a microscope, Sn96.5/Ag3.0/Cu0.5 alloy particles can be seen enriching toward the bottom, resulting in a residual thickness deviation of over ±15μm after squeegeeing, and the printing consistency directly falls below the IPC-7527 requirement of Cpk≥1.33.

JJY constant-temperature packaging uses double-layer vacuum aluminized polyester film to sandwich 28℃ phase change material PCM modules, and the outer box is embedded with a 3M temperature-sensitive ink label. When the inside of the box continuously exceeds 25℃ for 4 hours, it turns red, and on-site personnel can immediately open the box to activate the backup cold source. This design has been tested and verified on the Bangkok SMT production line. For 17 consecutive batches of solder paste shipped from Dongguan to Laem Chabang Port, the Tack Time attenuation rate after opening the box is controlled within 2.3%, the viscosity change is ≤800cP, and the thixotropic index is maintained in the range of 0.72~0.76, fully meeting the primary standard for solder paste transportation stability specified in J-STD-005.

We have found that customers often confuse constant-temperature boxes with ordinary insulated boxes. In fact, the key difference is that the PCM module must be placed closely against the side wall of the solder paste can, and the stacking gap between each layer must not be greater than 1.5cm. Otherwise, dynamic sea transportation bumps will cause the can to shift, resulting in a local thermal bridge effect. Among the 3 batches of goods we returned at Ho Chi Minh Port, 2 batches had the top can temperature soar to 31℃ due to misaligned PCM blocks during packing. After opening the can, a translucent oxide film had formed on the surface of the solder paste, and the solder joints were dull after reflow with a 18% decrease in thrust.

The RFID temperature sensor chip built into the JJY packaging box records data every 15 minutes, and the data is directly transmitted to the customer's MES system. When a batch is detained at Port Klang for more than 72 hours without customs clearance, the system automatically triggers an alarm, and the purchaser immediately coordinates with the local agent to open the box for sampling inspection, confirming that the solder paste is still within the qualified window and avoiding the return of the entire container. This closed-loop control is more reliable than simply relying on shipping schedules. After all, shipping delays are common on ASEAN routes, and solder paste does not get better the colder it is. Below 15℃, it instead induces Flux crystallization, leading to a 3-fold increase in stencil clogging rate.

In actual operation, the solder paste warming process must be calibrated synchronously. JJY recommends letting the solder paste stand in a constant-temperature room for 6 hours after arrival before opening the lid. Do not put it on the machine immediately after unpacking. A customer once directly opened the can and stirred the solder paste in the cold storage at Kuala Lumpur Airport, resulting in incomplete release of micro-bubbles inside the solder paste. After printing, void clusters with a diameter of over 80μm appeared, and the AOI false alarm rate surged to 12%. Later, a step-by-step warming method was adopted: first keep it at 22℃ for 4 hours, then slowly raise it to 25℃ for 2 hours, and the void rate fell back to below 0.35%.
