Solder Auxiliary Materials PCBA Soldering Supporting Consumables, Mainly Flux and PCB Cleaning Solution

PCBA soldering is not something that can be achieved solely by Solder Paste and reflow temperature. Improper selection of Soldering Auxiliary Materials will directly lead to common high-frequency production line issues such as solder bridging, cold solder joints, and false ICT test results. For example, last week we found that the void rate under BGA exceeded the standard by 12% on a customer's production line. The root cause was insufficient Flux activity, which prevented the surface tension of the molten solder balls from being fully released. While the flux was originally rated as RMA activity grade, its acid value was measured to decay too rapidly within the peak temperature range. Under the same 0.3mm stencil aperture conditions, JJY JY-608 rosin-based flux reduced the solder joint wetting angle from 56° to 32°, while also avoiding PAD peeling caused by excessive corrosion of the OSP layer.

Cleaning solvent is not about being as strong as possible; it must be strictly matched to the polarity, boiling point, and solubility parameters of the flux residue. The KB value of JJY XBS-205 halogen-free cleaning solvent is 29, which precisely covers the dissolution window for rosin derivatives and organic acid salts in JY-608 residues. If a solvent with a KB value above 35 is used instead, it will not only dissolve the edges of the solder mask ink causing color difference, but also increase the water absorption rate of the FR4 substrate by 0.17%, affecting the adhesion of subsequent conformal coatings. During comparative verification at a factory in Dongguan, we found that the failure advance rate of single boards cleaned with non-matching cleaning solvent reached 23% during high-temperature and high-humidity aging tests.

The flux application method determines its actual coverage rate. Choosing between spray or foam application should not only depend on equipment configuration, but also on the PCB component layout density and heat capacity differences. When 0402 resistors and QFN dual-row pins coexist in the same area, if the foam height exceeds 12mm, flux will accumulate under the QFN, forming glassy residues that are difficult to clean after cooling. JJY JY-608, in foam mode, controls the foam stabilization time at 8~10 seconds and maintains the foam diameter in the 0.8~1.2mm range, which just meets the uniform coverage requirements for this type of mixed-assembly board.

Batch stability of soldering auxiliary materials is more important than parameter sheets. We once continuously sampled and tested the solid content deviation of a batch of JJY JY-608. The three results were 28.3%, 28.1%, and 28.4%, with a fluctuation of less than 0.3%. Meanwhile, the solid content of a competing product of the same model ranged from 25.6% to 29.7%. This fluctuation is directly reflected in the post-reflow solder joint bridging rate. The standard deviation of the inter-batch bridging rate for JJY is 0.018%, which is far below the common industry level of 0.042%.

Storage conditions have a significant impact on the performance of soldering auxiliary materials. All JJY fluxes require storage in a cool, dark place and use within 30 days after opening. Cleaning solvents must be sealed for moisture protection and kept away from metal contact surfaces. We once found a batch of unopened JY-608 in a Shenzhen warehouse during summer, where the ambient humidity exceeded 75%RH, causing trace crystallization inside the bottle. Although it was re-dissolved in a 45℃ constant-temperature water bath, intermittent printing defects occurred after stencil printing. Under a microscope, the particle size distribution of the flux was observed to shift, with D90 increasing from 8.2μm to 11.6μm. This shows that soldering auxiliary materials are not consumables that can be used as soon as they are purchased, but key process variables that need to be included in SPC control.
