Q

How long is the shelf life of solder paste after opening? Can it still be used after the expiration date?

A
Once opened at room temperature, solder paste is generally recommended for use within 24 hours; when shop-floor temperature and humidity are high, shorten this to 12 hours. Beyond that, the flux keeps volatilizing and loses activity, the powder slowly oxidizes, and wettability tends to worsen with caking and cold joints. It is not recommended to keep running it on the line - even if it looks normal, the internal composition has already degraded, carrying a risk of batch soldering defects, so it must be scrapped according to the control procedure.

How long is the shelf life of Solder Paste after opening? This question is frequently asked in SMT production. Practical experience shows that the shelf life of solder paste after opening is usually between 1 and 3 months, but this period is affected by temperature, humidity, and storage methods.

If solder paste is left unused for a long time after opening, phenomena such as oxidation of solder particles, volatilization of Flux, or caking may occur. These changes will affect the fluidity and soldering effect of the solder paste, leading to problems such as cold solder joints and bridging.

What should be done in this situation? First, check the condition of the solder paste. If it is found to be obviously dry, caked, or has an odor, it is no longer recommended for use. If the condition is still acceptable, you can try stirring it evenly and testing it in small batches to observe the soldering effect.

How to avoid using expired solder paste? First, it is necessary to clearly mark the opening date of each batch of solder paste and keep good records. Secondly, ensure that the storage environment meets the requirements, with the temperature controlled below 25 degrees Celsius and the humidity not exceeding 60%.

During the procurement process, attention should also be paid to selecting products from formal channels to avoid premature failure of the solder paste due to quality issues. At the same time, reasonably arrange the usage plan to reduce unnecessary inventory backlog.

Although there are standards for the shelf life of solder paste, practical application still requires judgment based on specific conditions. Maintaining good operating habits and rigorous management processes can effectively ensure production quality.
