Connector Solder is not a simple substitute for general-purpose Solder Paste, but a solder system specially formulated for the characteristics of thin terminal structures, mixed plating, and dense pins. Its alloy composition, Flux activity, viscosity gradient, and slump control are all designed around the physical boundaries and heat capacity characteristics of connector terminals. For example, if standard 63/37 solder paste is used for FFC connectors with a 0.3mm pitch, it is highly prone to bridging or terminal floating during reflow due to unbalanced surface tension. However, dedicated connector solder, by fine-tuning the silver particle size distribution and organic acid activator ratio in the Sn96.5/Ag3.0/Cu0.5 alloy, maintains a controllable spreading radius for molten solder at a peak temperature of 220℃±3℃, preventing overflow beyond the terminal pad edges.
Terminal Plating Compatibility Determines the Baseline for Solder Selection
Our production line tests found that the same connector solder achieved a thrust pass rate of over 98.2% on Ni/Pd/Au plated terminals, but the initial soldering thrust on pure immersion tin terminals decreased by 17.6% and accelerated attenuation occurred after secondary reflow. The root cause is that the weak organic halogen activator contained in this solder has a directional etching effect on the palladium layer, promoting the rapid formation of intermetallic compounds (IMC), but reacts sluggishly with the tin layer. Therefore, connector solder batches must be reverse-locked based on the actual terminal plating report, and cross-plating mixing based solely on appearance or manufacturer nominal parameters is not allowed.
Printing Parameters Must Be Strongly Coupled with the Rheological Properties of Connector Solder
JJY JL-880 series connector solder has a thixotropic index of 4.3 and a viscosity of 820Pa·s at 25℃. This means that the stencil aperture must adopt a trapezoidal chamfer design, and the aperture area ratio must be strictly controlled between 0.72 and 0.78. Otherwise, if the squeegee pressure exceeds 5.8kg under a 30μm thick stencil, excessive shear thinning will cause solder collapse, resulting in solder ball residue between adjacent terminals. In a certain automotive B2B connector project, we failed to synchronously adjust the squeegee speed (originally set at 50mm/s) and demolding rate (originally set at 2.1mm/s), causing the short-circuit rate between 0.4mm pitch terminals to soar from 0.13% to 1.9%.
The Reflow Profile Must Match the Melting Range Window of Connector Solder
The liquidus temperature of connector solder is generally 8 to 12℃ higher than that of conventional solder paste. For example, the measured liquidus of JJY JL-920 is 217.3℃, and the solidus is 215.1℃. This narrow 1.2℃ melting range determines that the reflow peak temperature must be stable at 232±2℃, and the holding zone time must not exceed 65 seconds. Otherwise, brittle Cu6Sn5 phases will precipitate at the Au/Ni/Cu multilayer terminal interface. In a certain industrial camera interface project, we once had a local temperature zone deviation of 3.5℃ due to furnace temperature calibration deviation, causing the connector insertion and removal life to drop sharply from 5000 cycles to 820 cycles.
Storage and Usage Environment Directly Affect the Activity Attenuation of Connector Solder
JJY connector solder must be stored in an environment of 22±2℃ and RH45%±5% after opening. If placed in an environment with RH > 60% for more than 4 hours, the rosin derivatives in the flux will crosslink prematurely, causing whitening of solder joints after reflow and a wetting angle > 35°. At this time, even extending the preheating time cannot restore the activity, and it can only be scrapped. Our SMT workshop has been mandatory to install solder paste cabinets with humidity feedback, and the opening time of each can of connector solder is included in the MES system for real-time tracking.
