The selection of Connector Solder does not depend on the nominal melting point, but on actual production line feedback. After JJY Solder Wire was continuously operated in a wave soldering bath at 255°C for 48 hours, the solder joint tensile strength remained above 4.2 N, while Solder Bars of competing products with the same specification exhibited solder dragging caused by Flux carbonization after only 36 hours. This is directly related to the thermal stability of their rosin-based active ingredients, and also determines whether it can support the first-pass yield requirement of no rework after IDC terminal Dip Soldering.
The key to terminal dip soldering lies in the matching degree between the surface tension of the molten solder and the terminal plating. The spreading angle of JJY solder wire on phosphorus-containing copper terminals is stable at 28°±3°, which is 7° lower than that of conventional solder wires. This means that at the same dip soldering depth, the solder can trigger capillary rise earlier, and a 0.8-second dip soldering time is sufficient to achieve full pad coverage for 0.3 mm pitch pin headers. If solder bars are used instead, the preheating temperature must be increased from 120°C to 135°C to avoid cold solder joints and insufficient soldering.
Automatic soldering tracks impose more stringent requirements on the fluidity of connector solder. JJY solder bars can still maintain clear solder joint contours without solder spikes at a conveyor speed of 1.2 m/min, provided that the nitrogen purity in the solder bath must be stable at 99.99% and the fluctuation of the solder liquid level is controlled within ±0.3 mm. Otherwise, even a deviation of only 0.5 mm will cause uneven solder joints on high and low pins of connectors with a height difference of 0.8 mm. In this case, the solder scraper pressure must be synchronously adjusted to 1.8 kgf and the track inclination angle calibrated to 6.5°.
We once conducted cross-validation using the same spool of JJY solder wire on three automatic soldering machines of different brands, and found that the ionic contamination value of post-soldering residues fluctuated between 1.8 and 2.3 μg/cm², which is far below the upper limit of 3.5 μg/cm² specified in IPC-J-STD-004B. However, if the solder wire is stored for more than 90 days without vacuum sealing, its halogen content will rise from 85 ppm to 120 ppm, directly causing the post-soldering white fog defect rate of FPC connectors to jump from 0.12% to 0.89%.
Batch consistency of connector solder is more important than single-time performance. Each batch of JJY solder wire is accompanied by an XRF test report, in which the Cu impurity content is strictly controlled within the range of 18 to 22 ppm. Exceeding this range will induce a displacement reaction on gold-plated terminals, manifested as blackening at the edge of solder joints and a 15% decrease in thrust. This phenomenon is particularly prominent on 0.3 mm pitch board-to-board connectors, and the opened package must be used up on the same day.
