Solder Paste printing misalignment is not an isolated phenomenon; it often occurs simultaneously with uneven stencil tension distribution, out-of-tolerance flatness of the PCB bottom support platform, and abnormal reflection of Fiducial Marks. When AOI continuously alarms for misalignment at the same position with a consistent direction, first confirm whether there are burrs or local blockages at the edge of the stencil aperture in that area, then check whether the vacuum value of the printer nozzle is stably above -85 kPa, as slight PCB floating will directly amplify solder paste positioning errors.
We once found continuous 0.08 mm misalignment of 0201 resistor pads on an automotive controller production line; after troubleshooting, it was confirmed that a 0.03 mm height difference among support pins caused PCB warpage. In this case, simply adjusting Solder Paste Viscosity cannot address the root cause, and the mechanical positioning reference must be corrected synchronously. After switching to solder paste with a metal content of 89.5% and a viscosity of 620 Pa·s, the printing release stability improved significantly, indicating that the rheological properties of Printing Solder Paste must form a closed-loop match with the equipment's mechanical state.
When the squeegee angle is set to 60° and the printing speed exceeds 45 mm/s, insufficient shear of the solder paste inside the stencil aperture will cause front-end accumulation and back-end stringing, further leading to solder paste positioning drift. In this case, rather than simply reducing the speed, it is more effective to synchronously fine-tune the squeegee pressure from 5.2 kg to 4.8 kg and reduce the release speed from 2.5 mm/s to 1.8 mm/s. This combined adjustment is more likely to produce results than modifying only the solder paste, and is especially suitable for old equipment that is already in mass production but not under SPC control.
Insufficient solder paste warm-up time will lead to uneven Flux precipitation. In an environment with 65% RH humidity, we once measured that the edge burr rate after printing with solder paste that had not been temperature-soaked for 4 h increased by 37%, while the contour retention rate of the same batch of solder paste after temperature soaking improved to 92.6%. This shows that solder paste positioning accuracy depends not only on equipment parameters, but also on the real-time state of the material. The ironclad rule of "attach a temperature control label immediately upon opening, and only put it into production after 4 full hours" must be enforced on site.
Surface oxidation or solder paste residue on Fiducial Marks will mislead the visual recognition system, causing XY-axis compensation errors. In this case, even using high-precision solder paste certified by IPC-7527 cannot correct the misalignment. It is necessary to gently wipe the Mark area with a lint-free cloth dipped in isopropanol and redo Camera Calibration. The solder paste thickness test points of the first article after each changeover should cover high misalignment risk areas, and cannot only be measured at the center position.
