Causes of Solder Paste Component Shift After Long-Term Placement Following Solder Paste Mounting

Causes of Solder Paste Component Shift After Long-Term Placement Following Solder Paste Mounting

If solder paste placement is not promptly followed by entry into the reflow oven, and the assembly is left to stand at room temperature for more than 15 minutes, we frequently observe offset or tombstoning of 0201 and 0402 resistors and capacitors during AOI inspection. This occurs because the rosin matrix in the placement solder paste retains a certain degree of fluidity at room temperature, and its thixotropic recovery time is far longer than the structural stability window after printing. When the solder paste printing thickness deviation exceeds ±15% and the stencil aperture wall roughness Ra > 0.8 μm, edge burrs of the Solder Paste accelerate slow spreading toward the outside of the pad, thereby weakening the wrapping tension on the component terminals.

If the workshop ambient temperature is higher than 25°C and the relative humidity is lower than 40%, the volatilization rate of low-boiling-point solvents in the placement solder paste accelerates, causing the paste surface layer to rapidly lose moisture and harden while the interior remains in a soft state. This internal-external stress difference drives the entire solder paste to shrink toward the center of the pad, while simultaneously pushing the component outward. In particular, when the PCB back support fixture has 0.1 mm-level micro-warpage or the conveyor rollers are slightly eccentric, even a micro-vibration of only 0.3 g will be amplified into a displacement of more than 0.08 mm in the Y-axis direction of the component.

We once tracked the post-placement buffering time of the same model of placement machine for three consecutive days, and found that when the buffering time was extended from 8 minutes to 22 minutes, the proportion of 0603 components with X/Y-axis offset exceeding ±0.15 mm jumped from 1.7% to 14.3%. After switching to a high anti-slump placement solder paste with a thixotropic index > 4.8, the offset rate fell back to 2.9% under the same 22-minute buffering condition. This indicates that the rheological properties of the solder paste itself are more decisive than ambient temperature and humidity. However, if residual dried solder paste slag remains due to incomplete stencil cleaning, or the squeegee pressure fluctuation exceeds ±5 N, the printing consistency will be severely compromised even with high-end solder paste.

In actual production lines, the time from placement to reflow must be compressed to within 10 minutes. If buffering needs to be extended due to equipment scheduling, a nitrogen-protected buffering rack should be activated, and the temperature and humidity should be locked at 22±1°C and 55±5%RH. At the same time, the measured Tack Time of the placement solder paste batch should be included in incoming inspection items; any batch with a measured Tack Time < 12 minutes must be rejected, because when the stencil aperture dimensional tolerance is ±0.03 mm, the initial tack of this type of solder paste can no longer resist the shear component force generated by the component's own weight.

Operators habitually wipe nozzles with lint-free cloth during line changeover, but overlook that trace amounts of silicone oil remaining on the nozzle surface will migrate to the component body, reducing the interfacial energy between the solder paste and the component terminals during the standing phase before reflow, causing the temporary positioning originally maintained by van der Waals forces to fail. This failure is particularly pronounced on 0.3 mm pitch QFN-type devices, where the asymmetric force on the four-side pins causes the component to undergo rotational displacement rather than translational movement; in this case, simply increasing the Solder Paste Viscosity will instead exacerbate local wetting unevenness.
