Q

Can Solder Paste with Caking Still Be Put into Production Line Use?

A
Caked solder paste should not be put on the production line. Caking means the powder has oxidized and the flux system has failed, with the internal components of the paste separating. During printing, the clots readily block the stencil apertures, causing skip-printing and insufficient solder. In reflow, wetting is poor and cold joints, bridging, and voids appear easily. Even light caking cannot be restored by simple stirring, and stirring cannot repair already oxidized powder; treat it directly as scrap to avoid batch defects.

Solder Paste clumping is a common problem encountered in SMT processes, directly affecting soldering quality and production efficiency.

Clumped solder paste tends to cause defects such as missing prints and cold soldering during printing, impacting the reliability of circuit boards.

Solder paste clumping may be caused by improper storage conditions, excessive storage time, or insufficient stirring.

If solder paste clumping is found, first try to gently crush the clumps with a spatula, then stir thoroughly.

After stirring, check whether hard clumps still remain; if they cannot be completely dispersed, it is recommended to replace with new solder paste.

Clumped solder paste must not be arbitrarily put into the production line, otherwise it may lead to batch defects.

Operators need to regularly check the condition of solder paste to avoid losses caused by negligence.

The temperature and humidity of the storage environment have a direct impact on solder paste performance, and must be strictly controlled according to standards.

Seal and store properly after each use to prevent oxidation and clumping caused by exposure to air.

Choose reputable brands when purchasing to ensure stable and reliable solder paste quality.

Solder paste must be used within the specified time after opening; if expired, it needs to be re-evaluated.

Although clumping is a common problem, improper handling can lead to serious consequences.

In actual operation, it is necessary to respond flexibly according to specific situations.

Prevention is more important than post-incident handling, and daily management must be meticulous.

Maintaining good habits can effectively reduce the probability of clumping.

Handle problems promptly when discovered to avoid affecting the overall production schedule.

Although solder paste clumping is not a major problem, improper handling can trigger a chain reaction.

Every step must be taken seriously to ensure product quality.

Operators should have basic judgment ability to identify problems in a timely manner.

Proper handling of solder paste clumping can avoid a large amount of rework and cost waste.
