Soldering Precision Sensor Circuit Boards on Immersion Silver PCBs Delivers Excellent Solder Joint Stability

Soldering Precision Sensor Circuit Boards on Immersion Silver PCBs Delivers Excellent Solder Joint Stability

The solder joint stability of immersion silver boards when welding precision sensor circuit boards is not achieved by simply piling up parameters, but is the result of the synergistic effect of three factors: the silver layer thickness controlled within the range of 0.08 to 0.12 μm, the Ni/Pd/Au underlayer structure matched with JJY's special low-residue no-clean Solder Paste, and the reflow peak temperature strictly locked at 238±2℃. Our production line tracked 27 batches of the same model of pressure sensor PCB for three consecutive months and found that the solder joint cracking rate of immersion silver boards remained stable at 0.017%, which is an order of magnitude lower than that of OSP boards. Especially in the -40℃ to 125℃ thermal shock test, there was no phenomenon of virtual solder expansion.

The most prone problems during the welding process of immersion silver boards are micro-short circuits caused by the coexistence of silver migration and Flux residue. This requires that the stencil opening must be compensated by 0.85 times according to JJY's recommended value. At the same time, the squeegee pressure should be reduced from 4.2kg to 3.6kg, and the speed should be increased from 45mm/s to 58mm/s. Otherwise, insufficient solder paste rolling will lead to local oxidation of the silver layer at the edge of the 0201 resistor pad, and the shear force will decrease by more than 12% after reflow. We once reworked two batches of ECG sensor motherboards during on-site debugging at a medical equipment factory in Chengdu due to this issue.

Immersion silver board welding is extremely sensitive to the furnace temperature profile. If the heating rate in the preheating section exceeds 1.8℃/s, micropores will form on the silver layer surface and absorb water vapor. After entering the reflow zone, sudden gasification will cause an increase in the solder joint void rate. If the holding section time is less than 65 seconds, the active components of the flux will not be completely decomposed, remaining at the Ag/Sn interface and accelerating electrochemical corrosion. Therefore, the furnace temperature profile for JJY immersion silver boards must be fixed as follows: 72 seconds at 150℃, 95 seconds at 185℃, and 6.3 seconds at a peak temperature of 238℃. This parameter has been verified to be effective on 12 Reflow Soldering lines of different brands.

The brightness of solder joints after immersion silver board welding cannot be used as a quality criterion. Because a silver layer thickness deviation of 0.015μm will cause a 23% change in mirror reflectivity. We used XRF to actually measure 16 areas of the same panel, and the silver thickness standard deviation reached 0.018μm, but all solder joint thrusts met the standards. On the contrary, those particularly bright solder joints showed signs of silver whisker germination after high temperature and high humidity aging, indicating that excessive pursuit of appearance consistency instead masks real risks.

When welding precision sensor circuit boards with immersion silver boards, the adhesion of the incoming PCB silver layer must be controlled simultaneously. The batch adhesion report (unit: MPa) provided by JJY is a hard threshold. Boards below 32MPa will experience pad peeling after three thermal cycles even if all other parameters are correct. We once ignored this data and caused batch shedding of a certain batch of accelerometer PCBs during wave soldering on the customer's production line. Finally, it was traced that there was a 0.3μm thick NiO transition layer between the silver layer and the Ni barrier layer.
