JJY Solder Manufacturer is not merely a supplier selling Solder Bars, but a collaborative partner directly involved in process debugging for customers' wave soldering production lines. We require engineers to enter the workshop equipped with a handheld solder bath analyzer, wave height gauge, and Flux hydrometer. All parameter adjustments are based on real-time changes in solder bath surface tension, measured solder joint wetting angle, and PCB through-hole solder penetration rate, rather than arbitrary decisions based on experience.
Batch Consistency of Solder Bars Matters More Than Purity
If the Sn content fluctuation of the same model of solder bar between different melting furnace batches exceeds ±0.08%, it will cause abrupt changes in wave fluidity. We discovered on a customer's production line in Dongguan that the measured Cu impurity values of three consecutive batches of SGC-63A solder bars were 0.012%, 0.021%, and 0.007% respectively. Although all met the national standard upper limit of 0.03%, the solder bridging rate increased sharply by 17% after the third batch was put into use. The root cause was that Cu segregation altered the width of the Sn-Pb eutectic phase region, thereby affecting solder joint retraction behavior.
Wave Height and Chain Speed Must Be Calibrated in Conjunction
Wave height setting cannot be discussed independently of chain speed. When the chain speed is increased from 1.2m/min to 1.4m/min, if the wave height is not synchronously reduced by 0.3mm, it will cause excessive immersion depth of component leads and solder dragging spikes. We used a high-speed camera at a customer's site in Zhongshan to capture the solder bath fracture morphology at the moment leads leave the wave. We found that when the height/chain speed ratio exceeds 0.85mm·min/m, more than 90% of QFP devices exhibit bridging. After reducing this ratio to 0.72, the bridging rate dropped to below 0.4%.
Flux Spray Volume Must Be Dynamically Adjusted According to PCB Thickness
Conventional spray parameters are effective for 1.6mm thick boards, but when switching to 0.8mm thin boards, if the spray volume is not reduced by 35%, flux will accumulate at the wave entrance to form an air film barrier, leading to poor solder penetration. We used a thermal imager on a customer's production line in Foshan to observe that the board bottom temperature in areas with excessive spray was 23°C lower than in normal areas, which directly inhibited solder wetting and spreading. After switching to a pulse spray valve linked with the conveyor encoder, the solder penetration rate recovered from 82% to 98.6%.
Oxide Slag Removal Is Not Better When Done More Frequently
Cleaning slag more than 3 times a day will instead intensify solder bath disturbance, causing fine oxide particles to re-disperse. We continuously monitored the relationship between slag layer thickness and solder joint void rate for 72 hours on a customer's production line in Zhuhai. We found that the void rate was lowest when the slag thickness was maintained in the 8~12mm range. Below 6mm, oxygen entrainment increases; above 15mm, the frequency of slag shell rupture increases. Both conditions lead to discontinuities in the solder joint IMC layer.
Temperature Control Accuracy Error Must Be Locked Within ±1.5℃
If the measured temperature of each temperature zone in the wave soldering tank deviates from the set value by more than ±1.5℃, the viscosity change of the Sn63/Pb37 alloy will exceed the process window. We verified at a customer's site in Huizhou using a 12-channel thermocouple array. When the actual temperature in the holding zone was 2.1℃ lower than the set value, the solder joint climb height decreased by 0.14mm, and a large amount of unmelted flux residue was visible under a microscope. Conversely, when the preheating zone overheated by 1.8℃, the blistering rate of the PCB solder mask increased to 6.3%.
