The actual operating temperature profile of a reflow oven is never guaranteed by set parameters, but by closed-loop calibration between real-time data collected by the profiler and actual thermal response. On the JiajinYuan SMT line, we insist that before the first article of each shift, a metrology-certified K-type thermocouple must be used to perform three-point verification on the profiler, namely actual measurement comparison at 150°C, 200°C, and 250°C. If the deviation at any temperature point exceeds ±1.5°C, production must be paused and the profiler replaced or recalibrated. Otherwise, even if the oven temperature settings are completely correct, the peak temperature during actual PCB reflow will be more than 3°C lower, causing a large number of cold solder joints at the bottom of QFNs.
Verification is not a formality, but the first gate to block profile drift
Many engineers mistakenly believe that frequent verification is unnecessary as long as the heating section power of the reflow oven is stable. However, on-site data from JiajinYuan shows that after the same profiler is used continuously for 48 hours, the average reading drift in the 230°C range reaches +2.1°C. This directly causes the oven temperature control system to make a misjudgment and automatically reduce heating output, ultimately causing the actual profile peak to drop from 245°C to 241.3°C, which falls exactly below the wetting critical point of SnPb solder. The problem of insufficient IMC layer thickness in BGA solder joints then breaks out in concentration, and this phenomenon was only discovered during AOI missed-inspection re-verification in the third batch after verification failure.
Verification operations must be bound to specific actions and responsibility attribution
We require the entire verification process to be video-recorded and archived, and the operator must simultaneously record the ambient temperature and humidity, profiler number, verification time, and three sets of measured values. Among them, the 200°C point must take the average of three readings; if the range is greater than 0.8°C, the entire set is invalid and must be redone. This requirement seems cumbersome, but when a nitrogen flow fluctuation caused abnormal heat conduction in the soaking section last year, it was by comparing the repeatability difference of the 150°C point between the two sets of verification data before and after that we quickly located the poor contact of the thermocouple probe rather than a fault of the oven body itself, saving an average of 47 minutes of line-down troubleshooting time.
The service life of the profiler must be strongly correlated with verification frequency
JiajinYuan stipulates that all profilers must be mandatorily sent to the metrology room for re-inspection after cumulative use reaches 200 reflow cycles or storage exceeds 6 months, even if all previous pre-shift verifications were qualified. This is because high-temperature oxidation will cause lattice distortion in the nickel-chromium alloy thermode material, and its Seebeck coefficient decays non-linearly over time. This attenuation is particularly significant in the region above 250°C. There was a batch of newly replaced profilers that suddenly showed a reading jump of +3.7°C at the 245°C point at the 192nd reflow cycle. Post-disassembly inspection revealed that the insulating ceramic sleeve had micro-cracks, and there was a local short circuit in the internal thermode, indicating that relying solely on pre-shift verification cannot cover the full lifecycle risk.
The authenticity of the reflow oven temperature is always built on the traceability of the temperature measurement chain. Any behavior of skipping verification, delaying verification, or judging solely by memory is quietly amplifying the probability of cold solder joints. In all reflow oven ledgers of JiajinYuan, the activation date, verification records, and failure warning nodes of each profiler are clearly marked. This is not a management burden, but the last physical defense line to ensure soldering reliability.
