Low-Ion-Residue Sensor Soldering Solder Ensures Stable Sensing Signals

Low-Ion-Residue Sensor Soldering Solder Ensures Stable Sensing Signals

During production line debugging of pressure sensor modules, we found that 3% of units from the same welding batch exhibited slow zero-point drift after 72 hours of aging testing. Re-testing of ionic residue at solder joints showed that the Na? concentration at non-compliant joints reached 0.28 wt%, while qualified products remained stable below 0.09 wt%. This indicates that the ionic impurity content in sensor solders does not merely affect appearance cleanliness, but directly determines the electrochemical stability of the interface between sensitive elements and PCB pads. Particularly when the sensing bridge impedance exceeds 10MΩ and the signal amplitude is below 100μV, residual halide ions will form a micro-battery effect under bias voltage, inducing localized corrosion and altering contact resistance.

Jia Jinyuan LIS-702 solder introduces a composite organic passivator into the SAC305 matrix, reducing the surface tension of molten solder by 12% and compressing the wetting angle from 38° to 26°, thereby achieving void-free bridging on MEMS package pads with 0.3mm pitch. Meanwhile, its Flux system is purified via three rounds of molecular distillation, controlling the free acid value in raw rosin cracking products to within 0.35 mgKOH/g, far below the common industry range of 0.8~1.2. This significantly reduces the hygroscopicity of post-reflow residues, with no obvious ionic migration observed after 96 hours under 85℃/85%RH conditions.

We once conducted comparative testing of two solders using the same model of temperature and humidity sensor. For batches using conventional solder, after 15 days of operation in a constant temperature chamber, the standard deviation of ADC sampling values expanded from the initial ±0.8LSB to ±3.6LSB. After switching to Jia Jinyuan LIS-702, this indicator consistently remained within ±1.1LSB. This is because its low sodium and potassium residue effectively suppresses alkali metal ion penetration at the interface between the SiO? passivation layer and the solder, avoiding nonlinear growth of the equivalent oxide thickness of the gate dielectric, and thus ensuring consistency of transconductance parameters.

When conducting ion chromatography testing on the production line, attention must be paid to sampling methods. One cannot directly scrape residue from the solder joint surface; instead, the entire PCBA should be immersed in 10mL deionized water and ultrasonicated for 15 minutes. Otherwise, deep ions encapsulated by Solder Paste particles will be missed. We had two misjudgment incidents caused by only sampling the surface solution, which led to a 37% lower Cl? reading, resulting in the release of batches that actually exceeded the standard. This subsequently caused batch rework in automotive front-end installation projects. Therefore, the low ionic residue of sensor solders cannot be judged visually; it must be verified in a closed loop with standardized extraction procedures and IC instrument calibration curves.

The stencil aperture design before placement must also match the characteristics of low-residue solder. The viscosity of LIS-702 is 18% lower than that of conventional solder. If a 4mil thick stencil with 0.15mm apertures is still used for printing, it will easily cause solder paste collapse and bridging. We have adjusted the thickness to 3.5mil, reduced the aperture to 0.12mm, and lowered the squeegee pressure from 5.2kg to 4.0kg. This not only ensures a solder paste transfer rate >92%, but also avoids excessive flux accumulation. Final AOI inspection shows that the cold solder joint rate has dropped from 0.17% to 0.023%, and X-ray confirms that the void rate of all 0201-level sensing resistor solder joints is <8%.
