Placement misalignment is not an isolated issue; it has a strong coupling relationship with tombstoning defects. Especially when insufficient vacuum in the SMT nozzle causes components to tilt slightly after pickup, or vibration from the track conveyor causes drift in the PCB fiducial marks, one end of a 0201 package resistor is already suspended by more than 0.08 mm after placement. This tiny deviation is amplified into obvious tombstoning in the early stage of reflow before the Solder Paste is fully wetted.
How placement misalignment triggers the tombstoning mechanism
The physical essence of tombstoning is the imbalance of wetting forces at the two solder ends. Y-axis offset during the placement stage directly reduces the coverage area of one solder pad by more than 15%. Although the solder paste printing volume meets the standard, the insufficient actual contact area means that the surface tension of the molten solder at this end cannot effectively level the component, while the other end forms a stronger wetting traction due to complete coverage. This asymmetric force rapidly evolves into a 90-degree flip near the liquidus line.
Verification cannot rely solely on AOI sampling inspection
The SPI placement coordinate compensation function built into JJY SMT machines must be enabled, and the X/Yθ offset values of 5 components of the same model must be measured with a coordinate measuring machine for the first article of each shift. If the average offset is > ±0.12 mm or the θ angle is > 0.3°, production must be suspended to check whether nozzle wear, Feeder feeding step error, and Mark point recognition contrast are below 65%.
Placement verification must be embedded in the process error-proofing chain
We have deployed 100% online image comparison after placement on three main lines. The system automatically captures placement coordinates and compares them with the original CAD data. When a single component exceeds the offset tolerance, it locks the Feeder number and pushes an alarm to the technician's handheld terminal, while intercepting the next 3 boards from entering the reflow oven to prevent batch tombstoning from flowing into subsequent processes. This hard interception has reduced the tombstoning rate of 0201 capacitors for a certain customer from 3200 ppm to 170 ppm.
Typical on-site signals of verification failure
When the same Feeder shows the same direction offset for three consecutive batches, or tombstoning breaks out concentratedly at certain stations after replacing a new nozzle, or the placement coordinate log shows that the standard deviation of the θ angle suddenly increases to more than 0.45°, these are not accidental phenomena, but clear signals of mechanical fatigue in the placement system, attenuation of the visual light source, or uneven spring force of the Feeder. The line must be stopped on the same day for hardware-level reset instead of only adjusting software compensation parameters.
