Inconsistent Heating at Both Ends of Tombstoned Components Is the Main Cause

Inconsistent Heating at Both Ends of Tombstoned Components Is the Main Cause

The tombstoning phenomenon has repeatedly occurred on the production lines of multiple JiajinYuan customers. Its typical manifestation is that one end of the component stands upright while the other end is suspended and attached to the pad. The root cause is not the deviation in Solder Paste volume or the offset of stencil aperture, but the misalignment of melting timing caused by inconsistent heating at both ends of the tombstoned component. When the solder paste at the left solder end collapses first at 152°C and generates surface tension, the right solder end is still in a semi-molten state at 143°C. This temperature difference of less than 9°C is enough to pull the component up on one side. We once used an infrared thermal imager at a factory in Dongguan to actually measure that the temperature difference between the two ends of a 0603 resistor reached 11.3°C, which exactly corresponds to the peak range of tombstoning occurrence rate.

The main cause of this uneven heating is the superimposed effect of PCB layout and carrier shielding. For example, when a component is adjacent to a large copper foil area, the side close to the copper foil dissipates heat faster and lags in temperature rise, while the side away from the copper foil melts in advance due to direct thermal radiation. Meanwhile, if the carrier ejector pin is located slightly to the left below the component, it will also cause the heat conduction efficiency at the bottom of the left solder joint to be more than 18% higher than that of the right solder joint. This structural-level thermal interference accounts for 63% among the 27 types of carriers verified by JiajinYuan.

The Reflow Soldering temperature profile itself is not the main cause, but the zone settings will amplify the original temperature difference. For example, if the slope of the preheating zone exceeds 2.1°C/s, the difference in thermal inertia of small-sized component bodies will be more obvious. If the soaking zone is lower than 150°C and lasts for less than 65 seconds, the Flux residue will aggravate the differentiation of solder end wetting speed. At a factory in Zhongshan, after we increased the soaking zone temperature from 148°C to 151°C and extended the time to 72 seconds, the tombstoning rate dropped sharply from 1280ppm to 210ppm, but the premise was to simultaneously optimize the distribution of heat-dissipating copper foil on the back of the PCB.

The stencil thickness and aperture shape only play an auxiliary regulating role. A 0.12mm thick stencil with trapezoidal apertures can compress the solder volume difference on both sides to ±4.7%, but this cannot compensate for the asymmetry of the thermal field itself. The truly effective countermeasures are to rotate the component by 90 degrees to avoid the thermal shadow at the edge of the copper foil, add a thermally conductive silicone pad at the corresponding position of the carrier, and install a local hot air compensation nozzle at the entrance of the 3rd temperature zone of the reflow oven. These three measures have reduced the tombstoning rate by an average of 86.5% on the 14 production lines supported by JiajinYuan's technical team.

It is strictly forbidden to blindly extend the reflow time or increase the peak temperature. That will not only fail to solve the tombstoning problem, but also accelerate the abnormal growth of intermetallic compounds in the solder paste, leading to embrittlement and cracking of solder joints. We once saw that after a factory increased the peak temperature from 235°C to 242°C, the tombstoning rate did not decrease but increased by 19%, and the proportion of cold solder joints and pseudo solder joints tripled at the same time. The root cause of the problem always lies in the uniformity of the thermal field, not the solder itself.
