First Article Inspection for Solder-Insufficient Production Lines: Verify the Solder Paste Formation Status of Each Pad

First Article Inspection for Solder-Insufficient Production Lines: Verify the Solder Paste Formation Status of Each Pad

First-article confirmation for solder-deficient production lines is by no means a mere procedural formality; it requires leaning over a microscope to verify the Solder Paste forming status pad by pad, with particular attention to whether edge collapse, central depression, or local solder deficiency occurs on the pads of fine-pitch components such as 0201 and 0402. These phenomena often only reveal cold solder joints after reflow, but the root cause lies in the uncontrolLED Solder Paste transfer rate during the first-article printing stage.

Solder paste printing parameters must be strongly coupled with solder-deficiency design

The viscosity, thixotropic index, and metal content of Jia Jinyuan solder paste directly affect its filling efficiency in narrow-aperture stencils. If the squeegee pressure is below 0.8MPa, the printing speed exceeds 45mm/s, or the release rate is below 15mm/s, it will lead to insufficient solder paste thickness at the pad center, while micro-protrusions form at the edges due to extrusion. This uneven forming is easily misjudged as qualified during AOI inspection, but actually lays hidden risks of batch solder deficiency.

Stencil aperture size deviation is an invisible driver of solder deficiency

When inspecting the first article with a 100x magnifier, it was found that the solder paste height on the pads around the QFN chip was significantly lower than that in the middle area. Measurement confirmed that there was an accumulated etching tolerance of 0.012mm at the corresponding position of the stencil. Coupled with the inherent filling attenuation of Jia Jinyuan solder paste in apertures below 38μm, the actual solder volume on the edge pads ultimately reached only 67% of the theoretical value, far below the 85% lower limit required by IPC-7527.

Fluctuations in ambient temperature and humidity amplify solder deficiency risks

When the workshop temperature rises from 23℃ to 26℃ and the relative humidity drops from 55% to 42%, the solvent evaporation rate of Jia Jinyuan solder paste accelerates by 1.8 times. The surface of the solder paste forms a film prematurely, causing stringing breakage during release. At this time, even if the stencil is clean with no residue and the squeegee angle is set to 55°, intermittent solder deficiency will still appear on the BGA bottom pads of 3 consecutive PCBs. It is necessary to immediately stop the line, adjust the constant temperature and humidity system, and re-conduct first-article verification.

Microscope inspection must cover all key pad types on the entire board

First-article confirmation cannot only focus on BGA and QFP; it is also necessary to sample and test the 0.4mm pitch SOP-8 lead pads, 0.35mm pitch TSSOP-16 pads, and the pads at both ends of 0201 resistors. Because different pad sizes have extremely different shear responses to Jia Jinyuan solder paste, contradictory phenomena of excessive solder paste spreading and severe solder deficiency may coexist on the same PCB, indicating that local deformation rather than overall failure has occurred in the stencil tension.

First-article records must be bound to the solder paste batch and stencil usage count

Each first-article report must be handwritten with the production batch number, opening time, and stirring duration of the Jia Jinyuan solder paste used during the shift, while recording the cumulative printing count of the stencil. When the printing count exceeds 8000 times, even if there is no visible scratch, nickel layer fatigue will increase the roughness of the aperture sidewall to above 0.8μm, directly weakening the solder paste release capability. At this time, even adjusting the squeegee pressure cannot reverse the continuous downward trend of solder volume at the pad center.
