The stability of Solder Paste printing for fine-pitch ICs is highly dependent on the aperture accuracy and hole wall quality of SMT stencils. When the pitch shrinks to 0.3mm or even 0.25mm, traditional electroformed or etched stencils suffer from poor sidewall verticality, excessive burr residue, and severe aperture bottom shrinkage, leading to insufficient solder paste release and easy stringing, which can easily cause bridging and solder balls during the reflow stage. We once encountered three consecutive batches on an automotive-grade MCU production line where the bridging rate of 0.27mm pitch QFN reached 1.8%. After stopping the line to adjust the squeegee pressure and release speed, the problem could not be completely resolved, and it was only finally solved after switching to Jia Jinyuan micro-hole laser SMT stencils. This stencil uses a 1064nm fiber laser for point-by-point ablation forming, with the processing time for a single hole controlled within 8μs. Combined with nitrogen positive pressure purging and a secondary polishing process, the sidewall Ra value of the aperture is stably maintained at 0.23μm, and the taper angle is kept at 5.2°±0.3°. This structure makes the solder paste easier to detach from the hole wall under the shear action of the squeegee, reduces the rebound force during demolding by 37%, and prevents the solder paste from being torn out to form tiny solder balls.
The thickness tolerance of micro-hole laser SMT stencils must be strictly controlled within ±1μm, otherwise printing deviation will occur on a 0.12mm thick substrate due to uneven local tension. We measured that when the thickness of the central area of a certain batch of stencils was 0.119mm and the edge reached 0.122mm, the solder volume deviation at both ends of the QFP-64 device on the same PCB reached 23%. In contrast, each stencil delivered by Jia Jinyuan comes with a full-area thickness scanning map with no fewer than 128 data points, ensuring the consistency of tension across the entire stencil. In addition, its aperture shape is not a simple square, but a trapezoidal structure dynamically compensated based on the pad aspect ratio. For example, for a 0.2mm×0.4mm pad, the aperture is widened by 2.5μm in the long side direction and only 0.8μm in the short side direction. This not only ensures that the solder paste volume meets the Solder Joint Strength requirements, but also prevents lateral overflow that causes adjacent pad bridging.
During actual line changeover, one cannot only focus on the stencil itself, but also synchronously calibrate the flatness of the printing machine's support platform, the Z-axis zero offset of the vision system, and the blade wear state of the squeegee. A customer once reported that solder balls increased after a new SMT stencil was put into use. Upon disassembly and inspection, it was found that the squeegee had been used for more than 2.8 million times, with a blade fillet of 15μm, causing the solder paste to be squeezed and splashed at the moment of peeling. The problem disappeared immediately after replacing with a new squeegee and resetting the squeegee downward pressure to 0.18mm. The stencil supporting parameter package provided by Jia Jinyuan clearly marks the corresponding squeegee type, recommended downward pressure range, and first article verification method, rather than simply delivering a stencil and calling it a day.
