The selection of solder for industrial control motherboards must simultaneously consider SMT Solder Paste printing accuracy, Reflow Soldering thermal stress tolerance, and compatibility with subsequent wave soldering repair. JJY Solder Paste maintains a stable viscosity in the range of 750±50Pa·s at 25℃. When used with a 0.12mm-thick stencil, it can achieve over 92% area coverage on 85μm pads. Excessively low viscosity will cause slumping leading to bridging, while excessively high viscosity easily leads to printing skips and accelerated squeegee wear. In the mass production of a certain rail transit main control board, we found that when the particle size distribution D50 of the Sn96.5Ag3.0Cu0.5 alloy powder in the solder paste is controlled at 22±1.5μm, the post-reflow solder joint void rate is stably below 3.2%. However, if non-matching wave soldering bars are mixed for use, an excess impurity Pb content of 0.015wt% will cause the solder joint IMC layer to be over 12% thicker, further inducing thermal cycle failure.
The thixotropic index of JJY solder paste is maintained between 4.8 and 5.3, which not only ensures the shear thinning response speed during squeegee pressing, but also ensures that the paste does not flow after demolding. This is particularly critical for precision printing before 0.4mm pitch BGA ball mounting. The melting point window of the matching wave soldering bar is set at 227~230℃, which forms a reasonable gradient with the solder paste reflow peak temperature of 235±5℃, avoiding pad lifted caused by secondary melting. We once temporarily replaced a certain batch of Solder Bars, resulting in incomplete removal of OSP film residue after wave soldering. After 50 cycles of -40℃ thermal shock, a cold solder joint recurrence rate of 0.8% appeared. Re-testing confirmed that the rosin carrier acid value of this solder bar was 0.3mgKOH/g higher than normal, directly corroding the weak organic acid system balance preset for JJY solder paste.
The delivery of industrial control motherboard solder must meet the J-STD-004B Class L0 halogen residue requirement. The measured Cl? content of JJY solder paste is 8.3ppm, and Br? is 11.7ppm. When used with its dedicated solder bar, ion chromatography shows that the total post-soldering board surface halogen residue is ≤25ppm, which is far better than the IPC-A-610G Class 3 limit. However, for solder paste stored in an environment with 85%RH humidity for more than 72 hours, even if it is still within the shelf life, solvent volatilization will cause the viscosity to rise above 820Pa·s. If it is forcibly used for 0.3mm pitch QFN printing at this time, the 21% insufficient solder defect rate will climb to 47%. We insist on completing first article verification within 4 hours after each batch of solder paste is opened, and simultaneously testing whether the wetting angle of the matching solder bar is ≤28°. If this value is greater than 32°, it indicates that the surface oxide film of the solder bar has affected melting and spreading, and a new batch must be replaced.
The storage conditions of JJY solder paste are strictly limited to refrigerated, light-proof environment at 0~10℃. After thawing, it needs to stand at constant temperature for 4 hours before stirring. Otherwise, internal Flux phase separation will cause post-reflow solder joint blackening and a 18% decrease in thrust. After the matching solder bar is continuously used in the wave soldering pot for more than 120 hours, the Cu content will naturally enrich to above 0.07wt%. At this time, 15% of the solder bath must be replaced. Otherwise, obvious Cu6Sn5 needle-like precipitates will appear at the solder joint edges. This phenomenon is clearly visible under X-ray and cannot be identified by AOI. Industrial control motherboard solder is not an isolated material. The metallurgical matching, thermal history consistency, and residue chemical compatibility between solder paste and solder bar together form the underlying logic of soldering reliability. Any broken link will be exposed as early failure under high temperature, high humidity or vibration conditions.
