Choosing between no-clean Solder Paste and water-cleanable solder paste is never about looking at the parameter sheet; it depends on whether you have a cleaning station after Reflow Soldering, whether the customer accepts rosin residue, and whether there are BGA or CSP devices with a pitch below 0.3mm on the PCB. For example, our JJY 8MQP/5RQ series has a single halogen content of <900ppm and a solder wetting rate close to 100%, but it leaves relatively more residue that is pale yellow. If the downstream product is a communication module or a fingerprint lock mainboard, you must use a Domestic Solder Paste like 8MNTTP/5RNTT, which has a halogen content of only 100~200ppm and transparent residue; otherwise, the ICT test needle bed will easily slip and cause missed tests.
When evaluating water-cleanable solder paste, you cannot just focus on the word "washable". Although 8MW1P/5RW1 is nominally water-washable and low in cost, its ORH1 type Flux is highly corrosive to nickel-plated aluminum heat sinks. A factory once used it on LED driver boards without thorough rinsing, and local copper foil blistering appeared after three months. The problem was only solved after switching to 8MW1AP/5RW1A paired with Sn42Bi58 alloy powder, because the latter leaves residue that is more soluble in pure water after soldering at 160~185℃ and does not attack the nickel layer.Recommendations for Domestic Solder paste must include specific models and production line verification results. LFP-JJY5RR-0307 has a measured void rate of <3.2% on automotive lamp modules, which is 1.8 percentage points lower than a certain Japanese brand, provided that the reflow peak temperature is strictly controlled at 252±2℃ and the soaking zone is maintained for 150 seconds. LFP-JJY5RG-In52Sn48 has a melting point of only 118℃ and is specifically used for mounting reinforcement sheets on flexible display FPCs, but the component placement must be completed within 2 hours after printing; otherwise, flux volatilization will cause slumping, a detail many engineers overlook. In laser welding scenarios, never switch solder paste randomly. The 5RLJ series is compatible with pneumatic valves and jet valves, and T6/T7 grade ultra-fine powder (particle size D50=3.8μm) achieves dispensing consistency of ±4.5%. However, mixing in the ordinary T4 powder 8MQP/5RQ will cause frequent nozzle clogging, which once caused a two-hour line stoppage. The process only stabilized after all laser station solder pastes were unified to LFP-JJY5RLJ-305 and a constant-temperature material storage barrel was installed. One final reminder: the so-called "no-clean" is only a relative concept. 8MTSP/5RTS is nominally transparent in residue, but in southern summer workshops with humidity >75%RH, if the stencil aperture is 5% larger than the design value and the paste is left standing for more than 90 seconds after printing, micron-level white ionic residue will still precipitate under the BGA after reflow. At this point, you have to switch back to the 8MW5/5RW5 water-washable type; even if it adds a DI water rinsing step, it is still cheaper than after-sales rework.Related Articles
