FPC Welding Flexible Screen Module: Solder Joints Resist Cracking After Bending

FPC Welding Flexible Screen Module: Solder Joints Resist Cracking After Bending

During mass production of a certain automotive flexible central control screen, we found that with the traditional FPC soldering process, after the module completed bending assembly, the proportion of microcracks in solder joints in the COG area near the edge of the bending zone was as high as 0.8%. After switching to the customized FPC soldering solution from JiajinYuan, under the same working conditions, the solder joint cracking rate in the 200,000-cycle D-shaped bending test was reduced to 0.27%. The root cause is that during the Solder Paste printing stage, the stencil aperture was changed from a conventional rectangle to a trapezoidal chamfer design, and the squeegee pressure was fine-tuned from 4.5kg to 3.8kg, which narrowed the solder volume thickness fluctuation from ±12μm to ±6μm, thereby avoiding stress concentration at the solder joint neck caused by excessive local solder volume during reflow.

The Reflow Soldering profile must be dynamically adapted to the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the PI film of the FPC substrate. We lowered the peak temperature from 235℃ to 228℃, while tightening the time window above 183℃ from 68 seconds to 52 seconds. This not only ensures sufficient wetting of the SAC305 solder, but also prevents excessive softening of the PI film at high temperatures that would cause pad displacement. Actual production line data shows that this adjustment stabilizes the average thickness of the solder joint IMC layer at 2.3μm±0.4μm, with no occurrence of IMC embrittlement due to excessive thickness or cold solder joints due to insufficient thickness.

The FPC placement process must simultaneously monitor XY offset and Z-axis downward pressure. In the JiajinYuan placement machine program, the Y-axis compensation value is locked at -0.08mm, corresponding to the longitudinal shrinkage allowance of the FPC after heating, while the Z-axis pressure is set to 0.12MPa with a real-time pressure feedback closed loop enabled. If a single-point pressure deviation exceeding ±0.015MPa is detected, automatic re-placement is triggered immediately. This parameter combination increases the actual bonding coverage between the FPC pads and PCB pads from 91% to 97.6%, directly reducing uneven bending stress transmission caused by local voiding.

The cleaning process seems secondary, but actually affects the long-term reliability of solder joints. We canceled the conventional water washing process and switched to a low-surface-tension hydrocarbon solvent combined with 45℃ vacuum drying to avoid moisture residue penetrating to the edge of the FPC cover film. In the subsequent high-temperature and high-humidity aging test (85℃/85%RH/500h), this solution controls the ionic contamination residue of solder joints below 0.38μg/cm2, far lower than the 0.5μg/cm2 upper limit specified by IPC-J-STD-001, thereby eliminating hidden cracking caused by electrochemical migration.

All parameter adjustments are based on cross-validation of the same model of FPC and the same batch of solder paste from JiajinYuan, with no other materials replaced. This indicates that the improvement in FPC soldering stability does not rely on material iteration, but on the precise narrowing of the process window and multi-variable coupling control. On-site engineers need to compare three sets of first-article X-ray images every day, focusing on checking the continuity of the solder joint root curvature and the residual state of side solder balls. Once curvature mutation or solder ball accumulation is found, the line is immediately stopped to calibrate the stencil tension.
